I started on the inside sales desk with Meridian and due to cut backs, decided to take a position managing the accounts payable department. This would entail handling the accounts payable for 5 branches. I spent 8 years running this department, during which time I took the initiative to reduce costs on their services wherever possible. I found ways to improve the computer system, and streamlined the process, which allowed us to close off our year end within one month, which previously would take up to 3 months. Having done this I decided I now needed a new challenge and wanted to return to the sales department.

There were no positions available so I took a position as an inside sales assistant. The branch manager who was also a partner in the company asked me if I wanted to streamline their freight, as they had no contracts in place and no guidelines for their staff to assist them in bringing in rush orders. I embarked on my project and researched all the different types of freight requirements they had and proceeded to source the freight carriers that would be suitable for the requirements. I sent out the RFQ requests, took the quotes, analyzed them to determine who was the best overall pricing, and could offer the best service, selected the vendors and set up the contracts. The savings were substantial. We unfortunately had no process in place to assist in determining the actual savings, but they were significant enough that the branch manager who became our new purchasing manager in the process offered me a position in purchasing.

This was the start of my career in purchasing.
