In this capacity, I document accounting procedures, evaluate existing internal controls and help clients to design and implement more effective controls. The end result for our clients is meeting their respective Sarbanes-Oxley Act filing requirements at minimal cost. This work also requires that I identify and assist in the design and implementation of new internal controls or procedures, when necessary, resulting in more accurate accounting practices and more effective controls. I’ve worked with clients in the aerospace, video game manufacturing and banking industries across multiple areas of their operations, including manufacturing cost accounting, inventory management (including remote distribution), shipping (freight), tax compliance and payroll /employee benefits.

Client controls are adequate to meet management and external auditor requirements.

Controls originally defined by client personnel were evaluated and refined, leading to reductions in the numbers of key controls requiring annual testing, thereby reducing compliance costs over time.

CFO/Controller for the owner/operator of physical therapy and occupational medicine clinics

Planned and implemented the deployment of new financial software to accommodate the increased accounting and financial reporting complexity of a larger and more diverse company. Administered financial systems, accounting operations and risk management. Managed accounting staff and all accounting/reporting aspects for the company

Provided audit and tax support to company’s external accountants.

Contributions & Achievements:

Four acquisitions integrated into company’s financial accounting and operations over a period of eight months.

Participated in financial software conversion (Great Plains) project completed on time, on budget in less than three months, including new chart of accounts to facilitate enhanced consolidated financial reporting for a more complex organization

Reduced the monthly financial closing cycle from 45 to 15 days, providing more timely financial information for management and creating time for staff to work on other projects.

Assisted the conversion of payroll processing from an outside vendor to “in house” resulting in annual saving of up to $30,000 and a quicker process.

Converted physician professional liability insurance from previous vendor to a local, reputable insurer at first year savings in excess of $40,000.

Fisher Broadcasting – Seattle, Washington (1988-2002)

I directed financial and accounting operations for the largest subsidiary of a public company, working closely with the CEO to oversee expansion, station management and all financial activities for multiple station groups across the Pacific Northwest. I additionally served as a key member of the executive team, working with the Board of Directors and bankers to analyze potential acquisitions, perform due diligence and integrate acquired companies into our operations and systems. My additional duties included administration of the company’s healthcare, 401(k) and defined benefit retirement plans and federal/state tax compliance.

Contributions & Achievements:

Served on executive team that identified acquisition targets and negotiated the purchase agreements for broadcast stations. Led the integration of acquired stations into the company operations (4 major acquisitions).

Led a collaborative team that selected and deployed a client server-based HR & accounting system (PeopleSoft) to integrate of the company’s operations on one platform, providing enhanced financial reporting capabilities for individual business units and consolidated reporting capability for the company as a whole.

Merged two 401(k) plans into one, adding several plan enhancements and saving $60,000 in annual administrative costs.

Managed the termination/liquidation of a defined benefits plan, including the planning, employee communications and distributions of vested benefits to employees.

Implemented a partially self-funded healthcare plan, saving $300,000 in the first year, compared to fully insured rates.

Implemented a tracking system to accurately monitor the timing of cash in and out-flows, which saved the company $25,000 to $30,000 in annual borrowing costs.

Created a systematized approach to budgeting, training non-financial managers in “profitability principles” promoting the necessity for creating and adhering to a sound financial management plan.

Played a significant role in re-engineering operations of broadcast stations to reduce annual operating costs in excess of $2 million.
