PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Brighter Ideas, Inc., North Brunswick, NJ

Staff Biochemical Engineer, January 2007 – Present

Grow and purify high commodity bio-molecules to sustain the company’s operational costs and to finance the company’s research efforts for the development of intellectual property. Design laboratory experiments and organize small research teams to accomplish company goals.

Key Accomplishments:

•Singlehandedly took our patented GFP-on-a-String technology from its infancy as an idea and developed it into a 96 well plate assay and wrote a software suite which models the kinetics of tested proteases, stores the kinetic constants in a library, and links the library to a complex system of differential equations which completely describes the system and when solved simultaneously gives the identities and concentrations of unknown proteases acting on the system, turning the technology into a powerful analytical assay and giving it a marketable platform.

•Designed and built a pilot scale process which produced gram quantities of peroxidase from soy bean hulls scaling up from a 5 liter batch procedure to a 200 liter semi-continuous process.

•Created a novel three phase partitioning method to quickly produce highly purified antibodies from chicken yolk expanding the company’s antibody product line.

•Implemented a series of ELISA and densiometric SDS-PAGE assays with computer processing programs which have become the new SOP’s for ensuring the purity and activity of the company’s antibody products.

•Developed a bench top method and designed a scalable process to cheaply extract oil from algae; patent pending.

Atlantic Regional Home Systems, East Brunswick, NJ

Owner: Home Remodeling Business, January 2000 – Present

Prepare plans, material lists, and detailed estimates from $500-$30,000 for homeowners and insurance companies of work to be performed. Organize groups of 1-10 employees according to individual talent to work together to complete contracted jobs. Work closely with homeowners and other contractors to complete projects on time and within budget.

Center for Research and Education in Bioluminescence and Biotechnology (CREBB), New Brunswick, NJ

Laboratory Technician, Reoccurring Position as Needed per Short Course, March 2007 – May 2012

Provide technical training in areas of chromatography and immunology to scientists enrolled in the short course. Maintain cell lines and grow recombinant E. coli feed stocks to be purified by students during the short course.

Coastal Carolina University, Conway, SC

Teaching/Laboratory Assistant, Brief Tenure, September 2005 – June 2006

Organized laboratory experiments and assisted Professor Paul E. Richardson with teaching core concepts to students. Tutored general chemistry students M-F, after class under the guidance of Dr. Brett Simpson.

ADDITIONAL CHEMICAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Rutgers University, Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering

•Designed and built a two-chemostat steady state process which grew recombinant E. coli cells at high optical density expressing green fluorescent protein, taking a traditionally batch process and turning it into a continuous one; technology which could be adapted to the production of other recombinant proteins or antibiotics. – Poster

•Designed a process and generating a detailed preliminary estimate for a profitable bioethanol plant to produce 50 million gallons of ethanol per year using seaweed as a feedstock; by utilizing several large staggered batch fermenters connected to smaller continuously run upstream and downstream equipment, overhead and equipment idle time was kept to a minimum and the plant was projected to give a 9.6 % per year return on investment after taxes.

•Operated, modeled, and optimized pilot scale countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction and gas absorption columns for stripping organics from liquid feeds, and scrubbing CO2 from gas feeds.

LABORATORY SKILLS

•Antibody isolation and conjugation

•Ion Exchange, HIC, gas, SEC, IMAC, HPLC, FPLC, and thin layer chromatography

•Western/ Northern blotting and ELISAs

•FT-IR, UV-Vis, x-ray diffraction, NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopy

•Plasmid, DNA, and mRNA isolation

•Preparation of competent cells

•Wet chemistry: derivative preparations, titrations, gravimetric analyses

•Electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing
