On-site Engineer at a large investment and retail bank (UBS AG). More than seventy systems are configured for high availability/load balancing and run in Parallel Sysplexes on System z machines. The following tasks were carried out:

- research, testing and roll-out of new releases of z/OS (migration to V1.9 and V1.10). This included the co-ordination of mainframe network activities within the overall project which involved a roll-out across all test, development and production systems.

- testing and roll-out of a new version of IBM Session Manager (V2.1).

- customization and validation of a new Parallel Sysplex.

- changes, queries, problem resolution and conference calls relating to the Communications Server (TCP/IP, SNA), Session Manager and related tools. Testing of new function (e.g. IDS).

- provision of plans, schedules, design documentation and operating instructions.

Network Systems Programmer (agency contract)

Member of a team providing systems programming support to a retail organisation. Duties included:

- implementation of SAP R/3 for DB2 on OS/390 (modules FI, CO). Five OS/390 systems (V2.8) were built on a 9672 with ESCON and OSA-2/Express connections. The three-tier system includes SAP Application Servers running on Netfinity machines running NT and PCs running Windows 95 with SAP GUIs.

- implementation of a shadow SAP R/3 system on OS/390. This ran as a guest under VM/ESA with connectivity provided via a WAN. This involved the configuration of OSA-2 ENTR cards for TCP/IP Passthru (via a 7207 router) and SDLC connections (via a NT SNA Server).

- migrated production SAP systems from using OSA-ENTR to OSA-Express FENET cards. This involved the update of IODFs and generating OSA configuration/OAT files using OSA/SF.

- installation of NC-ACCESS V3 on OS/390 and the migration of users from V2.2. This involved making customisation changes, adding exits and installing a ZAP.

- configuration of Communications Server on three OS/390 systems (V2.6) to enable TCP/IP connectivity. Three systems were built on a Multiprise 3000 with ESCON connections between LPARs (MPCPTP links) and a CLAW link to a channel attached Cisco 7507 (via ESCON).

- supporting the migration of the LAN/WAN to a new provider. The LAN includes Token Ring and Ethernet/Fast Ethernet, the WAN supports DLSw (SNA/SDLC/APPN) and IP protocols.

- maintenance, update and tuning of network software on OS/390 systems and Cisco router configurations (including CIP CSNA and CLAW connections, X25 and DLSw parameters, queuing mechanisms and access-lists), network and systems problem analysis and resolution.

- evaluation of products including CONNECT:Direct, VPS, TMON for TCP/IP.

MVS Systems Programmer (agency contract)

Member of a team providing systems programming support in a multi-platform environment. Duties included:

- planning and installation of MVS and JES2 PTF maintenance on MVS/ESA 4.2/4.3. A test system was customised to run under VM/ESA.

- merging of two MVS systems. This included the amendment of Netview clists, REXX execs and message automation/processing tables; and system tuning.

- building LPARs to run test and production systems. These were migrated to two Amdahl Millenium 7000 Servers. This required the installation of Amdahl AMZIOCP and HCD PITs.

- planning, ordering and installation of OS/390 V2.6 . Installation dialogs were installed on an OS/390 V1.2 system and used to drive the installation of a ServerPac.

- migration of MVS V4.2 and OS/390 V1.2 systems to V2.6. This included the installation of toleration/co-existence PTFs on a MVS 4.2 system; upgrade of DF/DSS V2.4 to 2.5; implementation of GRS and shared RACF databases between the MVS and OS/390 V2.6 systems; the customisation of TME 10 OPC V2.2 and installation of exits.

- MVS and network problem analysis and resolution.

- administering changes and providing support on MVS, OS/390 and the SNA network.

Network Engineer (agency contract) Jan - Sep 1997

Member of a team providing support to the IBM field force regarding frame relay networks. The team evaluates equipment for attachment to IBM's Global frame relay Network. Duties included:

- specification, installation and configuration of software running on a network management station. CascadeView/UX, was installed on a Sun Sparc workstation with Solaris, Common Desktop Environment, Sybase SQL Server and HP OpenView Entry Node Manager. CascadeView is used to configure and manage frame relay networks.

- installation and configuration of a test network based on Ascend's B-STDX 8000 Multiservice WAN Switch. The network includes IBM/Cisco routers and AS/400s.

- provision of technical support including the configuration of scenarios (TCP/IP), Solaris system administration (eg startup/shutdown/backup and restore procedures, shell programming) and problem solving.

Network Engineer (agency contract) Jan - Dec 1996

Member of a team responsible for:

- planning, designing, implementing and supporting customer attachments to IBM's Global Multiprotocol Router Network (MPN). This network supports various protocols and addressing schemes and can be accessed using leased line and dial connections.

- supporting a country-wide backbone IP network comprising of Cisco routers. This network is connected to the MPN via IBM 6611 routers. Name resolution is provided by domain name servers (DNS). Netview for AIX is used to monitor and manage the network.

The following activities were carried out:

- review of the existing backbone IP network, comprising of IDNX nodes with LWX software and modules and token-ring LANs. Gathering of requirements and production of a detailed design and migration plan. Configuring (TCP/IP, PPP, OSPF), testing, implementing and tuning of the replacement WAN utilising Cisco 4500-Ms.

- administration of the local DNS environment (RS/6000). Maintenance of AIX (PTF installation, systems security). Installation of country proxy and firewall machines used to facilitate and secure access to the Internet.
