Another Late Night With Mr. Good Luck
Mr. Luck: Tonight I’m glad we have Ms. Jodi Schuldenfrei in the house! I find it fascinating that she wanted to be a teacher her whole life and actually did it! Let’s bring her out… Hey Jodi! You’ve been a General Education Teacher for the past fifteen years. Thirteen of those years have been in PS 20Q. Tell me more about it.
Jodi: Thank you for having me on your show! I’m really excited about being here. Most of my tenure has been in Third Grade. I absolutely loved all of the challenges that go into this kind of teaching. This is the year when students are generally no longer just learning how to read, they are primarily reading to learn. They are able to become more advanced critical thinkers and they can really understand many complex issues.
Mr. Luck: What are some attributes that make you a better teacher?
Jodi: I use The Workshop Model that requires Whole Class Learning, Group Learning, and Differentiated Learning daily along with individual conferencing. I also believe that all children can learn and need a lot of positive individual reinforcement which I am always giving them. I always find ways to build on their individual strengths. An example would be me taking an interest as them as individuals. I take their personal strengths and interests and find ways to incorporate them into their individual learning styles to help build on their academic weaknesses.
Mr. Luck: Wow, what about some other things that make you the teacher you are today?
Jodi: This past year was very interesting for me! I was the Lead Teacher in a Co Teaching Second Grade and my class was the Advanced High Concentrated ESL Class. In addition to teaching, I prepared them for the NYSESLAT; a language acquisition test.
Mr. Luck: What did you do to help you prepare them for this challenging test?
Jodi: I received VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) training. While using VTS, my students paid more attention to details while using more complex thinking. They started to communicate a lot more verbally and their writing improved as well.
Mr. Luck: This sounds like nothing we used in school! Is there anything else you want to share with us?
Jodi: My class also was very fortunate to take part in The Arts Connection Program, which taught them self worth and confidence that reflected in their class work. They learned Chinese Dance Movements, wrote a story, and performed a dance.
Mr. Luck: I heard a rumor that you wanted to go into the private sector of teaching, is there any truth to that? If there is any truth to this, why do you want to teach in the private sector?
Jodi: After many years of teaching in public schools, I want to focus more on molding my students as individual learners and less on test results. The learning process is more of a focal point in many private schools. Success starts with the teacher who needs to possess a love for teaching and can deliver it in a positive manner. With that being said, all children can and will learn beginning at a very early age. Early Childhood Education is extremely imperative in today’s society and literacy is a key component. I want to be able to pass my love for learning, especially in literacy, onto young learners who will thrive off my passion and my knowledge. This is more appealing and necessary to me since I am always looking to enhance myself as a professional and for new ways to fine-tune my strengths and further develop new skills and strategies.
Mr. Luck: Thank you for sharing your love of teaching with us.
Jodi: The pleasure has been all mine and I would love to come back. Please call me!
