Objective: Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Test Engineer, Composites, LSDYNA

EDUCATION

• Master of Applied Science (M.A. Sc) in Mechanical Engineering May 2005

Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

• B.Sc Mechanical Engineering April 2000

University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, Pakistan

PROFILE

• Caterpillar Inc. - worked as a test & product development engineer analyzing and validating performance and test parameters of continuously variable transmissions.

• 3 years of research experience as a research assistant working on bird impact analysis of fixed wing aircraft wing leading edge using LS-DYNA.

• More than 2 years of research experience working on static, buckling and vibration analyses of curved laminated composite beams using MATLAB for writing finite element codes.

• More than 1 year of work experience as a production engineer in a precision machine shop supervising lathe and milling machines.

• During studies have taken major subjects like fracture mechanics and fatigue, stress analysis, structural composites, finite element method, design optimization, mechanical vibrations and aircraft structures.

• Good basics, quick learner, excellent organizational and leadership qualities along with good verbal and writing skills.

• Proficiency in understanding and communicating technical material to the audience.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL, USA (through Volt) Sep’08 - Jan’09

Transmission Development Engineer

• My job involved working with test engineers and facility personnel to develop upper powertrain for cycling transmission applications. Responsibilities included planning and executing in-lab test activities with optimization of transmission control software, component inspections, analyzing machine and transmission performance, and documenting results and recommendations.

• Matlab Simulink and Stateflow were used to develop transmission controls. Systems included Allen Bradley, DATK, eDAQ for controls development and data analysis.

Mechanical Engineering Dept., Concordia University, Montreal, Canada June’05-May’08

Research Assistant

CRIAQ Research Project 3.1: Bird Strike Analysis of H-stab Wing Leading Edge using LSDYNA

• Worked on CRIAQ research project in collaboration with industrial partners Bombardier Aeronautics, Bell Helicopter and Pratt & Whitney. This fluid structure interaction (FSI) research project included developing and calibrating an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) multi material bird and impacting it on h-stab wing leading edge using LS-DYNA. Peak pressure values and pressure traces were compared with the experimental data available during the calibration by impacting the bird on a flat rigid plate. After the calibration, the bird was impacted at two locations at wing leading edge at an impact velocity of 300 knots.

• Gain in internal energy, shock pressure, global energy distribution, strain rate effects, penetration and different failure criteria etc. were considered in the analysis.

Mechanical Engineering Dept., Concordia University, Montreal, Canada Sep’02- May 05

Graduate Research Assistant

Thesis: Static and Buckling Analyses of Metallic and Composite Curved Beams using Hierarchical FEM

• Hierarchical finite element method for curved composite beams was developed and applied to perform static and buckling analyses. A MATLAB finite element code was developed for the analysis and results were validated using exact solutions and closed form Ritz solutions.

• Parametric study was performed for five different laminate configurations and two boundary conditions during the work.

Advanced Engineering Solutions, Pakistan Jan’01- Mar’02

Production Engineer

• Supervised lathe and milling machines section of a precision machine shop and got training of CNC part programming. Prepared process sheets of the components along with universal and special tooling requirements.

• Used Mechanical Desktop 4 for 3D solid modeling of components to be manufactured on CNC machines.

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences, Topi, Pakistan Aug’00-Dec’00

Teaching Assistant

• Employed by GIKI as a teaching assistant for teaching laboratory courses and assisting faculty members in Solid Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials and Stress Analysis.

• Design and conducted laboratory course on Solid Mechanics.

INTERNSHIP

National Centre for Non-Destructive Testing, Pakistan

• Got hands on experience during four weeks training of different non-destructive testing techniques including radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, leak testing, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing and acoustic emission & fracture analysis.

PROJECTS

• Finite element static and vibration analyses of laminated composite plates using classical laminate, first order shear deformation and layerwise theories. MATLAB was used to write the finite element codes for the analysis.
