Communications Manager

Wholly owned by RBS Group, Coutts focuses on wealth management services for affluent clients and is widely recognized as the Queen’s bank. As part of RBS Wealth Management, Coutts is undergoing a major change project involving transferring its entire business onto the Avaloq banking technology platform, while embedding a new operating model and working culture.

As communications manager my responsibilities included:

• Internal campaigns – planning and delivery of training communications, roll-out of a new operating model and development of a program to prepare staff for client queries prior to Avaloq implementation

• Channel management – intranet, newsletters, audios, town halls

• Content – responsibility for drafting/editing senior management announcements, intranet messages, audio scripts, PowerPoint presentations

• Co-ordinatoring and planning all communications work stream activity with the Programme Management Office

Senior Internal Communications Manager

ING Group is one of Europe’s top 20 financial institutions. The Commercial Banking (CB) business serves the banking needs of large corporations and multinationals, financial institutions and governments around the world.

The Amsterdam-based internal communications team is tasked with communicating to 15,000 employees in 40 countries. My responsibilities included:

• Acting as a trusted advisor and providing communications guidance to the senior management team

• Developing CB’s ‘Fitter, Focused, Further’ strategy via regular updates, a communications cascade, the development of content and presentations

• Change management communications related to redundancies and organisational restructuring

• Communicating quarterly financial results to the business via channels including senior management conference call, town halls, video message, Q&As etc

• Providing support and developing content for specific senior managers including the global head of the business and the head of the largest regional market (the Netherlands)

• Communications lead - with planning and budgeting responsibility - on business initiatives impacting multiple stakeholder groups

• Coordinating employee communications for specific business lines including Corporate Clients, Structured Finance and Financial Institutions

• Working with the Human Resource department on strategy for communicating HR initiatives to a wider audience

• Managing day-to-day communication activities including coordinating intranet content creation

The majority of this time was spent working at one of the world’s largest news websites – the Mail Online. I worked in a number of senior positions including news editor, homepage editor and night editor, my experience included:

• Working in a highly pressurized environment with constant deadlines

• Responsibility for ensuring the site reacted to breaking news while also reflecting the agenda of the parent newspaper - the Daily Mail

• Managing a team of up to 12 journalists at any given time

• Liaising with senior editors and attending news conferences

As a freelancer I also regularly worked for the Sky News website and for Haymarket Media Group on UK business titles including PR Week and Media Week. I also contributed features to national British newspapers including The Guardian and The Times.
