Senior Vehicle System Engineer (1994 – 2009)

Lead engineering level interface with clients for the automotive HVAC system control head business line of this Fortune 100 company.

• Prepared, developed, and presented responses to RFQs which included schematic capture, pcb layout, component selection, cost estimating, electronic packaging critical in being awarded over $2M of business.

• Requested repeatedly by clients due to my demonstrated technical knowledge, professional skills in customer management, performance, interpersonal skills, professional ethics and high level of oral and written communication skills.

• Create, communicate, and maintain program VRD (Vehicle Requirements Document) which detailed product requirements, development objectives, functional specifications, design specifications and qualification test plans. Responsible for providing program team (mechanical and software design groups) high-level engineering requirements for over 20 vehicle applications including hybrid vehicle applications.

• Defined, design and developed software content and operation characteristics of numerous embedded automotive HVAC systems using flow charts and other documentation formats.

• Communicated daily with customer engineers, suppliers and internal engineers on a regular basis to insure all aspects of the product met customer expectations. Provide leadership to various design teams to manage engineering trade-offs, systems integration, cost-benefit, and schedule.

• Coordinated interface with other modules such as PCM, BCM, Cluster, HVAC control, ECT at a system level. In addition interface with electromechanical devices such as small DC motors, sensors, and electronic control modules.

• Led critical system level, product, and manufacturing design reviews to insure adhering to design and regulatory standards with extra attention to insured key items are addressed for any safety related items. In addition support of internal/external quality gate reviews is provided.

• Evaluate and approve design concepts, development through production to insure conformances to requirements system-level and sub system performance and cost requirements are met.

• Create system and bench level test plans to validate system electrical, EMC, and performance. Supported mule level dynamometer, proving ground, and organized and conducted over the road testing to validate system met safety, performance and, reliability.

• Support technicians in the field diagnosing systems problems. Also evaluate of failures to determine root cause and corrective actions.

• Provide written and oral communications to customers and various levels of management along with interpersonal skills to effectively manage requirements to meet both the customers and internal business goals.

Program Manager (1992 – 1994)

Managed both Mechanical and Electrical Engineers across multiple vehicle platforms and clients: GM truck and bus, Chrysler and Nissan. Oversaw all aspects from business proposals through production release to resolving production and field problems.

• Led a 12 member mechanical and electrical engineer design team responsible for analyzing system requirements, meeting cost and capacity needs, winning business, design of product and reduction in plant returns and field failure rates. Oversaw the generation of engineering change notices (ECN) to tack cost and communicate changes.

• Managed multiple product launches (11 new products) which increased annual volume from $800K per year to $1.2M per year.

• Define work requirements, project goals, scope, tasks, technical deliverables, and timing for electrical, mechanical and system engineers, circuit board designers, and suppliers.

• Define performance objectives within the constraints of delivered cost, timing, and performance risk.

• Conducted design / gate reviews at predetermined points during project/product development.

• Implemented continuous improvement design changes which reduced the rate of returned parts from assembly plants by an average of 10 Parts per Million and field failures an average of 8 PPM.

• Responsible for profit and loss for this business section.
