Personal Profile

I am currently employed in HM Prison Service. I have been a Prison Officer for 13 years. Before joining the prison service I served as a soldier in the British Army. I have had various and in depth training in the security and protection areas. I have received, over the years, various letters of thanks from my employer for the processional attitude and conduct I have shown whilst working in the most demanding of roles, and under the most extremes of pressure. I am a very well respected member of the service from both my peers and those of which are in custody. I always strive to do the very best at any given task I am asked to do, or I choose to under take. I have experience at middle management level. Things this would involve are; the daily roistering of staff in their duty's. Identifying any staff shortfalls and making sure that all jobs/tasks are fully covered. Identifying and implementing staff training needs. Attending all incidents and making "On the spot" decisions. Being responsible for the safe and well being of all staff, visitors, those in custody, and property. Being responsible for the safe day to day running of the prison. Making myself available as a point of contact for staff, visitors, and those in custody, for any questions or problems they might have, and being able to answer those queries with an accurate and professional answer. Reporting to senior management at any given time, producing an accurate statement of events. I am a very loyal employee who will always give you 110% at all times. I am always well presented in my manner, attitude and appearance. I work very well as part of a team, and can also work just as well on my own initiative. I have no problem taking orders and have no problems giving orders. I have good man management skills and will always try to get the best out of my team, at the same time doing what is best for the team and the company. I will do my best to develop the team with any kind of training which would be of benefit to the company. I can be very pro-active with a hands on approach, but can also take a step back to observe the bigger picture. I am punctual and can meet deadlines given to me, even if this means working late or taking work home to finish. By choosing to employ me you will be gaining an asset to your company. Someone who you can rely on to produce a high quality and professional standard of work. In short, if you choose to employ me you would be making the correct and valuable decision. It would be something you would not regret doing.

Technical Skills

I have gained HGV 1, 2, 3 licences. I also have a full UK car licence and a full UK motorcycle licence. Working for the Prison Service I have been security vetted to a high level. I am fully trained in the safe security of static objects, ie, buildings or things similar in nature, and their surrounding area. I am trained to methodically search any given area, room or building to a very high standard. I am fully trained in the security of and safe guarding of individuals, which could involve the searching of, and different searching methods used, up to and including the strip searching of individuals and or visitors. I am fully trained in Control and Restraint techniques to an advanced level, allowing me to safely, and with minimal force, restrain any possible person who may be considered a threat to person or property. I am also trained with how to deal with multiple threats to persons or property, ie; crowd control or rioting crowds. Part of that training also involves the proper and safe usage of the ASP. The training also involves how to operate in a multi functional team, or how to use my skills when alone. I am trained in report writing to a high level, being able to produce informative, neat and accurate reports. I am trained in suicide and self harm procedures. This includes the interviewing of individuals, and then being able to produce a written report on the interview detailing any findings and action plans that might need to be implemented. I am trained in fire protection and the use of smoke hoods. This involves being able to enter a smoke filled room with no visibility, finding and removing any potential victims to a safe area. Part of this training also involves the use of the different types of fire extinguishers, and knowing what extinguisher to use for the different type of fires that can occur. I am basic first aid trained.

I am also the Union branch Health and Safety Representative, a position I have held for the last 4 years.

My qualifications in this area of my work are; TUC Stage 1 & 2 Health and Safety, Diploma level 3 in Health and safety (I am a member of IOSH at Tech status). I will also be starting the TUC Diploma in health and Safety in September 2011. Although I already have a Diploma in Health and Safety this course will approach the subject from a different angle thus broadening my expertise.

I am competent in work place inspections, writing Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work. I can investigate incidents, accidents and near miss’s, and write a full and comprehensive report of my findings with recommendations attached if needed.

I always keep up to date with current Health and Safety law and legislation. Also Acas approved code of practice. I am very pro-active with health and Safety, with a “hands on” approach.

Although I am foremost a Prison Officer, I am also a Health and Safety Advisor, and am capable of being a full time Health and Safety Advisor, as my qualifications demonstrate.

If the “Right” offer were made, I would have no hesitation or apprehension of becoming a full time health and safety Advisor.
