Visited each regional sales manager and made arrangements to present an OSHA safety program to all branch managers in each region. Within three years the accident rate was reduced.

Working closely with the bargaining unit at a cement manufacturing facility accident rates were greatly reduced. Improved communications with the bargaining unit increased the importance of working together in a team effort to improve the safety program. Created a 5 year No Lost Time accident record for this facility.

Working closely with the bargaining unit at a cement manufacturing facility created SOP and JSA to address maintenance and work task performed around coal fired kilns, milling operations, and shipping operations.

Developed and trained in OSHA safety to address topics which included: first line supervisor responsibility in safety, accident investigation, equipment guarding, mobile equipment safety

Worked closely with first line supervisors and upper management to address noise and dust issues in all areas of responsibility which included mining and manufacturing

Mining operation received a Mine Safety and Health citation for not having safety switches on the clutch assembly on five mining trucks. The gravity of this citation may have led to a fine of $1,000.00 per truck. In addition to the $5,000.00 per truck installation of such a safety switch. The company had 50 of these trucks in operation. Proved that the inspector had not interpreted the standard correctly. The citation was vacated.

The Holmes Safety Association always recognized safety records by the number of man hours worked. Small mines could not compete with million man hour mines on a yearly basis. Became a member on the executive board of the Holmes Safety Association and lobbied for small mine recognition in the “Sentinels of Safety” awards program. Holmes now recognizes mines which employee 25 miners or less, and the best of these are now eligible for a “Sentinels of Safety” award.

Created a safety awards program which recognized the outstanding mining crew of the year for our company. This program was developed to include OSHA manufacturing facilities. This award was presented annually at the Plant Managers meeting which was attended by plant, regional, and executive management. It brought awareness of the safety effort to the entire company.

Produced economical in-house OSHA safety videos utilizing employees and manufacturing operations. Employee’s interest in safety grew even stronger as they were able to recognize fellow employees and themselves contributing to video safety training.

Became part of the UT Austin Industrial Education Department’s “Mentoring Group.” Larger organizations reached “across the fence” to small organizations to assist them with safety concerns.
