1988 to January 2009

NBC affiliate operating in nation's 32nd

largest television market; generates

approximately $40 million annually.

Operations supported by 125 employees

including 60 employees in news department.

News Director (1998 - 2009)

Oversaw entire scope of news (including

weather and sports) department operations

producing 32 hours of news weekly (5 hours

daily) and several special programs

annually; responsible for $6.5 million

operating budget (station's largest) in

addition to performance of 5 direct

reports (indirect responsibility for 65

full-time and 5 part-time staff).

Contributed to capital budget process and

assisted with selection of annual capital

projects; collaborated with President,

General Manager and Business Manager on

budget issue resolution, updates and

reductions/freezes as means of supporting

overall profit and loss results. Operated

as Chair of Safety Committee.

Evaluated and responded to newscast

performances, strategized daily news

coverage, led editorial meetings,

delegate daily/weekly priorities, directed

post newscast meetings and planning

sessions, determine newscast strategies;

guide team throughout emergency and

breaking news coverage. Work in concert

with external groups on coordination of

events and shows.

Hired talent and worked with staff to improve

media techniques, assign staff to

newscasts, and determined anchor coverage;

negotiated anchor and reporter union

contracts in collaboration with AFTRA and

IBEW; represented station and company during

recruiting from annual minority

conventions (NAHJ and NABJ). Also

negotiated vendor contracts.

In 2006, NBC 4 Newscast ranked #1 in

Columbus at 6:00pm and 11:00pm; Neilson HH

Overnights (January 01, 2006 - December

31, 2006) performed at 9.0/18 for M-F 6-

6:30pm News and 9.5/18 for M-Su 11-11:35pm

News.

* Successfully met and exceeded news

department performance expectations

with 2006, 2004 and 2002 results far

exceeding projected revenue target;

guided station 1st place ranking in

6:00am and 11:00pm newscasts for more

than 7 years.

* Met 2% budget reduction (passed down by

corporate) by strategically managing

operating costs, delegating open

position responsibilities,

restructuring payroll, and

collaborating with vendors to lower

costs; simultaneously ensured

effectiveness and quality of product

throughout market. Lowered annual

budget $125,000 in 2003 and $100,000 in

2001.

* Throughout tenure, contained budget to

no more than 3% increase and performed

as 1st News Director to operate within

budget 7 consecutive years; effectively

administered operations and financial

outcomes amidst constant deadlines and

extreme pressure.

* Member of team representing station to

prospective buyers and facilitated sale

for full asking price to Media General

(2006); earned $42,000 bonus from NBC

for contributions.

* Spearheaded Six Sigma project (2000)

enhancing news story production via

improved work flow, reduced errors and

elevated quality; also developed Zero

Base project designed to analyze staff

and competitive landscape providing

ability to determine long and short

term modifications (initiative

implemented in other departments due to

success in newsroom).

* Orchestrated project upgrading

technical environment to digital from

analog; upgrades include newsroom

computer systems, weather systems,

field equipment, and editing equipment;

currently serving as member of team

planning, designing and implementing

remote downtown studio (recognized

amidst most unique and complex projects

in station's history).

* Currently leading restructuring of

editorial focus and story coverage

requiring change in newsroom culture

(shared vision of what makes news and

methods to market differences);

restructure utilized research projects

to develop approach to daily story

coverage and unique focus on methods to

cover news in Central Ohio.

* Teamed with legal representation on

negotiation of 3 IBEW contracts

(ultimately addressing budget

constraints); successfully negotiated

removal of 2 penalties (saving more

than $25,000 annually), eliminated

exclusive work duties and protected

classifications, changed structure of

annual raises and hired new employees

at 2-5% less than salaries of departed

associates.

* Paired with legal representation on 3

AFTRA contract negotiations; most

recent negotiation won right to hire

free-line Reporters with current move

removing exclusive work duties and

protected classifications.

* Collaborated with local colleges on

development of intern program;

encourage young professionals to

consider in broadcasting as career

possibility.

* Effectively prepared associates for

positions of increased responsibility

at larger stations; several previous

managers and on-air talent currently

operate in top 20 markets.

* Served as Chairperson of 2003 United

Way campaign; results exceeded targeted

goals and facilitated team building

session throughout station departments.

Managing Editor (1996 - 1998)

Coordinated and directed daily content and

field operations, scheduled more than 30

staff (including Assignment Desk, Anchors

and Reporters) and served as liaison

between newsroom and outside organizations

(including government offices and

officials). Supported News Director

throughout budgeting process and cost

control/containment.

* Played instrumental role in station

recognition with several AP awards for

Spot News Coverage, Best News Operation

and Breaking News Coverage.

* Improved weekend coverage (without need

for additional staff or expense) by

redesigning Anchor and Reporter

schedule; also redesigned Assignment

Desk to improve coverage from 16 hours

per day, 5 days per week, to 20 hours

per day (free from adding staff of

expense).

* Elevated overall ratings by focusing

newsroom concentration on breaking news

and severe weather coverage; utilized

research and implemented relative

policy changes resulting in ratings

improvements and several awards.

Director of News Operations/Assignments

(1993 - 1998)

Oversaw and ensured day to day

contributions of newsroom field crews;

coordinated scheduling of Editors,

Assignment Desk, Reporters and Anchors.

Planned news coverage as well as special

events including Bowl Games, RWB and

Sweeps strategy.

morning and 11:00pm news and #2

throughout day.

and weekends by redesigning
