FREELANCE JOURNALIST AND TRANSLATOR 2000 until present

• Reported on young Russian men fleeing Russia to Cyprus and other European countries in order to escape draft into the Russian army (Vestnik Kipra).

• Covered murder of a Hong Kong lawyer and his Russian girlfriend in Vladivostok (Vladivostok).

• Researched newspaper archives in Khabarovsk for a story about the trial of Japanese doctors who had conducted human experiments in Harbin, China, during World War II (Japan Times and South China Morning Post).

• Traveled to the Philippines, South Korea, China, Mongolia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Greece, Turkey and many parts of Russia in pursuit of stories.

• Interpreted and contributed to a story about Chechen militants living in Jordan and recovering from wounds received in combat in their war-torn homeland (the Moscow Times).

• Contributed to the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, the New York Times, Russia Business Review, the Chicago Tribune, the South China Morning Post, Echo Planety, Argumenty i Fakty and other media.

THE VLADIVOSTOK NEWS, Russia

Deputy Editor 1995-2000

• Supervised translators and advertising department, assigned stories to reporters and ran the newsroom under the supervision of the editor-in-chief.

• Interpreted for reporters pursuing stories on ostrich farming in Sakhalin, illegal dog-fighting in Vladivostok and the Primorye governor’s gift of a Siberian tiger skin to President Lukashenko of Belarus--an alleged violation of international treaties on trade in endangered species.

• Reported on a governor who allegedly tried to strong-arm campaign contributions from a shipping company--and seized control of the firm when owners refused to comply.

• With the help of a USAID grant, helped launch the first Internet newspaper in the Russian Far East.

• Planned and coordinated the international conference in the Russia Far East on electronic media for journalists (November 1996).

Translator 1993-1995

• Translated articles from the Russian parent newspaper for the English edition.

FREELANCE TRANSLATOR AND INTERPRETER, Vladivostok 1990-1993

• At a time when President Yeltsin opened the formerly closed military seaport to the world, worked with businessmen translating contracts and assisting in negotiations. Led tour group excursions for American tourists.

• Managed property and equipment of the Laboratory of Marine Geology. Organized and filed paperwork and translated scientific articles for publication in the U.S.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• B.A. with red diploma (equivalent of summa cum laude) from Vladivostok’s Far Eastern State University in English Linguistics, 1987.

• Journalism Ethics Seminar, 1999. Was one of eight journalists from throughout the former Soviet Union invited to attend a prestigious three-week seminar by the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Press Center in New York, Washington and Houston.

• Selected to attend BBC Seminar on British Mass Media, 1996. Spent six weeks in London for lectures, visits to newsrooms, and discussions on the role of the press in the free society. Studied with editors at the BBC, The Financial Times, and The Scotsman in Edinburgh.

• Took part in 1997 critique by expert from Starwave, Inc., of the Web edition of the Vladivostok News and its parent paper. Starwave produced Web sites for ABC News and ESPN, among other media.

• Took part in conferences on translation and interpretation in Chicago in 2005 and 2009.

PUBLICATIONS

• Translated 335-page coffee-table biography of explorer and ethnographer Vladimir Arseniev (1997, Ussuri Press, Vladivostok).
