• I completed my clinical rotations in this rural Illinois hospital. At this facility we rotated through the following specialties in 5-6 week intervals: internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery (first-assist), psychiatry, geriatrics, OB/GYN, emergency medicine, family practice, and orthopedics (first-assist). These rotations included a complement of self-directed learning, problem-based learning modules, and clinical experiential learning. Throughout both hospital and clinical settings, I was able to experience a wide range of outpatient and inpatient experiences. • During this 5 week elective rotation in orthopedics, I gained experience in clinical and hospital patient care. I was first-assist with surgeries involving total hip and knee replacements, ACL reconstructions, shoulder and knee arthroscopies, rotator cuff repairs, ORIFs, and carpal tunnel and trigger finger releases. I was also involved in pre-surgical H & Ps and post-op rounding. Clinical duties included assisting with casting/splinting, fracture and dislocation reductions, new patient and consultation evaluation and treatment as well as x-ray interpretation and electronic chart documentation.

The studies in this psychiatry lab included researching the various stages of addiction in rats and testing various hormone injections and witnessing the effects on the stages of addiction.

• Research Associates tracked patients in the emergency department and determined who was eligible for specific research studies (studies exploring conscious sedation medications, pain medications, and economic background studies to name a few). After consenting the eligible patients, we carried out the study which involved anything from collecting the data and conducting surveys to timing how long it took health care professionals to carry out certain tasks when caring for a patient. RAs were able to interact with patients directly while witnessing emergency medicine in action as well as learning how to carry out clinical research.
