Work Experience/ About Me-
My work experience is broad, covering customer service, management
and animal care. I began working in retail grocery when I was 16 years old. I
worked as a night supervisor during my senior year of high school and stayed
with the same company for nine years.
During my time with Piggly Wiggly I filled a variety of positions ranging from
assistant bookkeeper to floral arranger for the holidays. This experience gave me
the tools to succeed as a supervisor and later a front-end manager/lead
bookkeeper for Kroger.
During my management and supervisory days I was responsible for all
aspects of scheduling, customer service, hiring, disciplinary actions, and dismissal
of employees. At any given time I was responsible for as many as 40 or more
employees in my department. When store management was out or on vacation,
I was acting store assistant manager.
There was always something missing for me in my career and when I
became a docent at The Little Rock Zoo I realized that animal interaction and
public education where the missing ingredient to making my career life enjoyable
and fulfilled. Once my children were all in school, I decided to take a job at the
zoo as head cashier in the customer service department. I also enrolled in
college for the first time.
When I started college and my seasonal employment ended at the zoo, I
continued to volunteer as a docent. My training there was the most enjoyable
experience. I learned everything from animal behavior to falconry.
While in college as a Wildlife Biology major, I was Vice-President and later
President of the Biology Club. This gave me opportunity to do more public
outreach and speaking for educational purposes related to wildlife conservation.
After my new semester was underway, I began working third shift at the
only local veterinary emergency clinic around. I had never worked in veterinary
medicine, but wanted to be a veterinarian my entire life, so this was the most
exciting job I had ever had. The experience and knowledge I gained in that E. R.
is what led me to strive and excel in the animal care field I am in today.
Due to my husband’s educational opportunities, we moved our family back
home to Florida. I spent a year working as a veterinary technician in a private
animal hospital.
Our family, like most others, was struggling to stay ahead, so we made
the decision to move one last time before the children started junior high school.
My husband went to work for Halliburton and left for Iraq. He felt he would stay
with the company after his tour in Baghdad, so we moved to Texas. I took a job
with a local animal control shelter as the shelter attendant. I worked for eight
months as a temporary employee until a germinant position could be created for
me. For the next two and a half years, I worked as shelter attendant. In 2006 I
was promoted to Administrative Clerk. Both positions presented a variety of
challenges and incredible opportunities for me.
In May of 2008 I was presented with a wonderful opportunity to run and
direct my own shelter. I was hired as Shelter Manager/ Director for the SPCA of
Galveston County d.b.a. Bay Area Pet Adoptions/ SPCA. I enjoy working with the
community and the animals. The SPCA has been my home for three years now
and leaving it will be very difficult.
Now single mother, I have made the decision to move my teenage sons
back home to Florida so I can be closer to family and friends. I have been
visiting CMA since childhood and would love to put my broad spectrum of
experience to work for your organization.
