Work Experience

Grazia Magazine May ‘09/Sept ‘09 Intern

I won a coveted placement as editorial intern at Grazia magazine, where I gained the knowledge and understanding I require to progress in the fashion journalism industry. I have since been asked to return for a further fortnight. My tasks included assisting journalists in researching features, transcribing interviews and database input. In addition, the Editorial Assistant took a weeks holiday, during which time I took on her role, arranging meetings for the Editor, using Excel and taking phone calls.

Zara, Brighton Jun ‘08 – Jul ‘09 Visual Merchandiser

I worked to ensure products were displayed commercially to drive sales and profits through effective planning and control of intake, stock levels, and rankings and rotations. I developed floor plans which maximised the space and layout of the store, and I was responsible for training the assistant V.M and ensuring the sales assistants were knowledgeable of the V.M rules. I developed an excellent relationship with my regional managers, communicating feedback from the store effectively and confidently. I became experienced in working with new visual merchandising ideas, from conception to delivery. I grew to be extremely confident in our customer profile, and thoroughly enjoyed the creative opportunities I had to help build outfits with a specific shopper in mind.

I wrote a fashion tips column for the weekly Saturday supplement and helped devise short, snappy headlines for the ‘Dear Editor’ page, both of which were published. I took part in the morning briefs, which taught me about the prioritisation of news stories.

I gained knowledge about how a popular television program is created and about each person’s role within a television production. I learnt about lighting, filming and editing and helped source props, whilst assisting with the organisation of each show.

July 2009: Practical 20 hour course, including maintaining an environment conductive to learning, and using a variety of practice activities to motivate learners. I am in the process of completing a further 80 hour Distance Learning TEFL certificate.

An in depth study of language to understand the diversity and power of communication, which has taught me how to apply different approaches when researching and writing for different audiences and purposes. I have addressed the concepts of media communication and had the opportunity to take classes in Journalism, Creative Writing and Feminist Theory, exploring the representation of African American men in reports of gun and knife crime, ‘Urban’ language and identity and the feminist constructs within women’s fashion magazines.
