Gene Yee, Ph.D., is a healthcare consultant (and freelance medical writer), with expertise in business development, marketing, medical communications, public relations, and competitive intelligence. (Recently, he provided competitive intelligence as a consultant for Sanofi-Aventis for Temusi (NV1-FGF) gene therapy to treat peripheral artery (PAD) and cardiovascular (CV) diseases via therapeutic angiogenesis.) He has covered/attended major conferences, eg, American Heart Association, American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy, American Society of Clinical Oncology, National Kidney Foundation, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Hematology. Dr. Yee is also Head, Public Relations for the Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra, a performing arts 501(c)(3) based in Topsfield. On the political front, Dr. Yee ran for Alderman-at-Large for Melrose, MA, in 2011. He was previously Director, Strategic and Business Development at The Angiogenesis Foundation (Cambridge, MA), the world’s first and only 501(c)(3) for angiogenesis-based cancer and disease medicines. He led them to new fundraising heights: $561,000 in 4Q08 2Q09 vs. $200,000 in 4Q07 2Q08 (historic standard), including alliances with companies (Sanofi-Aventis, AnGes, Genzyme, Baxter) developing gene and cell therapies to treat PAD and CV disease, as well as manufacturers of anti-angiogenic targeted cancer therapies (Genentech, Bayer, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, etc.), including renal cell, lung, colon, breast, GI, and other angiogenic-dependent cancers. Prior to this, he was Scientific Director and Director of Scientific Communication at Omnicom Group Inc. the leading global advertising, marketing, and corporate communications company, where in NYC, he led a $2 million Roche account (in a $7 billion chronic kidney/anemia market) for pre-launch publication planning. Other publication plans (which Adelphi pioneered in 1986) included a Novartis plan for emerging compounds in prostate, dermatologic, and solid cancers, and a major Pfizer Lyrica (pregabalin) account in neurology, pain, epilepsy, and fibromyalgia. For the Boston Omnicom affiliate, he did publication planning for a Consortium on fatigue in cancer (encompassing the FDA, industry, and research institutes), and patient-oriented outcomes (PRO) research for use as FDA-approved endpoints in advanced phase trials. Prior to Omnicom, Dr. Yee was Editorial Director at Ross Communications, specializing in oncology publications, including a major publication plan and marketing in prostate and breast cancers for Novartis a major manufacturer of bone agents Zometa (zoledronic acid) and Aredia (palmidronate disodium), as well as Bayer (Nexavar), Eli Lilly (Gemzar), Sanofi-Aventis (Eloxatin), and other companies with anti-cancer agents in renal cell (RCC), prostate, lung, breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, brain, head & neck, and other cancers, including sponsors Bristol Myers Squibb, Pfizer, and MedImmune. (Other publications covered analgesia and erectile dysfunction.) He was also Scientific and Managing Editor of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology (ISGIO), a 501(c)(3). Before this, he was Managing Editor at Moore Communications in NYC, in the areas of infectious disease (Hepatitis B), GI, and psychiatry. Dr. Yee has also been a Scientist-Lecturer (Marketing) for Pall Corporation, the world leader in filtration technology (East Hills, NY), with biomedical device marketing in CV surgery (as well as cardioplegia and transplantation), hematology-oncology, orthopedic and colorectal surgery, and critical care/anesthesia for N. America/Asia-Pacific Rim (~120 annual presentations), and executing in-house/field marketing, training, and competitive intelligence. He also developed/supported a countrywide initiative for the Canadian Red Cross’ universal implementation of leukocyte filtration, and trained the American Red Cross on cell filtration. Prior to private industry, he conducted Ph.D.-level research at Boston University and Tufts Medical Centers in Molecular Biology, Pathology, and Dermatology.

Dr. Yee has a plethora of experience in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), solid, and lymphocytic tumor types. As an example in just one tumor type, while Director at The Angiogenesis Foundation, he led and developed business collaborations with major pharmaceutical companies who currently market and develop anti-angiogenic therapies in RCC (eg, Bayer, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Genentech, AstraZeneca, etc.). These ranged from clinical/physician education, patient resources, and outreach for patients and their advocates. While Editorial Director at the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology (ISGIO), Dr. Yee directed and wrote Oncology journal articles and supplements, as well as Oncology News International articles to support the product launch of Nexavar (Sorafenib). He also directed and/or wrote publications supporting the clinical use of conventional chemotherapy to treat RCC for another major pharmaceutical sponsor. As a member of a major oncology publications agency and the ISGIO, he helped develop and implement an international clinical trials and publications database for a clinical program for GI carcinomas, including RCC. In this regard, Dr. Yee also directed and implemented series of advisory boards, investigator meetings, and conferences that covered RCC. Dr. Yee’s experience is similar across multiple tumor types, gene and cell therapy, and biotechnology (proteomics).

Regarding regulatory work, Dr. Yee has prepared FDA briefing documents (in oncology (2005-7), cancer-related fatigue (2007-8), obesity (2007-8), chronic kidney/anemia (2006-7), and gene therapy for peripheral artery disease (2010). He also worked on pre-submission work to FDA in oncology (2005-7) and chronic kidney anemia (2006-7), and submission work to FDA in oncology (2005-6). Dr. Yee also authored a industry consortium application to FDA to re-classify (by amendment) medical devices in hematology-oncology, surgery, and CV surgery (1997-8). He also worked with FDA on patient-reported outcomes (including FDA briefing documents, patient-reported outcomes [PROs], and questionnaires) (2007-8), and with FDA's Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications (DDMAC) on product labeling claims (in cancer-related fatigue), (2007-8). Dr. Yee also has experience with FDA 510(k) device submissions and premarket notifications (2010). Regarding other regulatory agencies, he has also interacted with EMEA (1997-8, 2007, 2009).

Dr. Yee earned a Ph.D. in Immunology from The University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He received a B.A. in Microbiology and Immunology from The University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Yee’s outside interests include history of stage illusion and magic, Houdini, and classical music history. He also led tours of Symphony Hall, Boston, and participated in Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth Education, audience development, and fund-raising. His wife Jennifer and he are noted magic collectors and historians, and perform large, dramatic stage illusions as “Yee Magik.” The Yees reside at historic Heathman Manor in Melrose, MA (former residence of famous mentalist and magician Anna Eva Fay Jennifer’s great grandaunt and Houdini’s friend). Madame Fay headlined worldwide, performed for royalty, and was the first woman inducted into the prestigious Magic Circle U.K. Their favorite charities include Greyhound Friends, The Northern Forest Canoe Trail, WGBH, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Museum of Science, North Shore Cancer Walk, and Bike MS (Cape Cod Getaway). They also hike, paddle, and are active in historic stewardship, conservation, and their rescued racing greyhound!
