To Whom It Concerns:
I was excited to hear about the opening for a Program Coordinator with the Women’s Resource Center.
I am looking for a position that will allow me to utilize my professional skills and that will make a
difference in the lives of individuals and in the community. I believe that developing and
implementing a mentoring program for women who have been involved with the correctional system
would provide me with such an opportunity.
My experiences during my career have been diverse and the attached resume provides an overview of
the work that I have done. However, I will briefly highlight some of the experiences I have had that
have direct applicability to this position.
• Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation/Coordination: As an individual with a
Master’s Degree in health education and as a Certified Health Education Specialist, I have specific
training in: 1) needs assessment, 2) program planning, 3) program implementation, 4) program
evaluation, and 5) project management/program administration. I have worked extensively in all of
these areas.
For close to nine years, I have been the Adult Viral Hepatitis Prevention Coordinator for the
Michigan Department of Community Health, where I am responsible for conducting needs
assessment activities and planning, implementing, and coordinating viral hepatitis services.
For 14 years, I was the Chief Health Educator for the Kent County Health Department. In this
capacity, I supervised the Department’s Health Education Section, which had responsibility for the
development, implementation, and evaluation of programming in a myriad of content areas.
In addition, as an independent contractor, I have worked on many projects that required expertise in
these process areas.
• Working with Marginalized Populations: Much of the work I have done throughout my career
has involved working to develop programming for marginalized populations.
In my current position, as the Adult Viral Hepatitis Prevention Coordinator, the focus of much of
my work has been on hepatitis C, a disease that disproportionally impacts individuals who: 1)
currently use or have a history of injection drug use, 2) have or who have a history of mental illness,
3) are homeless, 4) have contact with the correctional system, and 5) are at risk for or have
HIV/AIDS. During my tenure at the Michigan Department of Community Health, I have worked
to integrate hepatitis C services into programming at HIV/AIDS organizations, substance use
disorder treatment programs, needle exchange programs, and into primary health care services
offered through Community Health Centers/Federally Qualified Health Centers.
The work I have done throughout my career also included working with and developing services for
diverse populations including individuals from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds,
individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and gay, bisexual, and transgender populations.
• Ability to Work with Women Who Have Had Contact with the Correctional System: I have
done some work directly with correctional populations. As the Chief Health Educator, my staff
provided educational presentations/classes to inmates at the Kent County Jail. In addition, I have
done several presentations on HIV and hepatitis C in correctional settings.
My strong content background in the areas of substance use, mental illness, and violence including
childhood abuse, domestic violence, and other trauma also provide me with an understanding of the
impact these types of life experiences can have on women.
• Working with Volunteers/Mentors: My extensive experience in the areas of management and
administration including interviewing, hiring, and supervising staff have provided me with many of
the skills needed to interview, supervise and support mentors. In addition to overseeing staff, as the
Director of Health and Safety for the American Red Cross of West Central Michigan, my section
was responsible for working with the cadre of volunteers that taught health and safety section class
offerings.
• Collaborative Efforts/Working with Multiple Systems: My entire career has involved working
with multiple constituencies and building collaborations. This experience, combined with my
ability to build relationships, would allow me to successfully work with community agencies and
organizations and to do the networking needed to promote the mentoring project and to successfully
recruit mentors.
• Curriculum Development/Training: I have significant experience develop training curriculums
and delivering trainings. During my career, I have developed and delivered trainings in a variety of
content and process areas.
As an example, in my current position, as the Adult Viral Hepatitis Prevention Coordinator, I have
developed hepatitis-focused trainings that were tailored to meet the needs of individuals working in
HIV/AIDS organizations and substance use disorder treatment programs, as well as for health care
providers working in primary care settings.
• Knowledge of Research Techniques: I am familiar with different research models and have
been involved in developing and utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data collection
techniques to do programmatic process and outcome evaluations.
Finally, I have both strong written and verbal communication skills. I also have the ability to take
individual initiative, as well as to work successfully in a team environment.
I appreciate your consideration of my candidacy. If you would like to discuss my qualifications further,
I can be reached at 616-***-**** or *********@*********.***.
Sincerely
