EXPERIENCE

Consultant, Missouri City, TX (02/09 – Present)

Process Engineering Consultant

Consulted in various phases of Process Engineering. Projects included;

Siemens Energy, Houston, TX (01/12 – present) Reviewed process safety systems and recommended changes to inadequate systems to bring them into compliance with current safety standards and client guidelines. Identified areas that needed to be modified to bring them into compliance with regulations. Utilized proprietary software for this work.

Upstream Engineering and Development, Houston TX (09/11 – 10/11) Wrote Process Control and Process Narratives for a Natural Gas to DME plant located on a FPSO. Identified and developed processes, and proposed two solutions to a previously unnoticed problem that required sulfur removal.

Downs-Stanford,, Sugar Land, TX (05/11 – 09/11) Reviewed, evaluated, and wrote comments on processes and subpoenaed documents regarding a Poly Silicon Plant incident.

Other typical projects include:

Determined Process Safety Time for Refinery Alarm Systems

Led a HAZOP on a pilot plant scale distillation system.

Alvin Community College, Alvin, TX (9/04 – Present)

Instructor – Process Technology

Teach as an adjunct instructor . Subjects include Industrial Processes, Chemistry, and Instrumentation.

ENGlobal Engineering Corp., Houston, TX (5/07 – 1/09)

Lead Process Engineer

Lead process design teams in preparing process simulations on Aspen Hysys, conceptual process designs, feasibility studies, FEEDs, process development, and Detail Process Designs

Technologies studied included both coal and natural gas gasification, hydrocracking & hydrotreating, shift conversion, and offsites design.

Led a team to determine how a South American could modernize, and expand their refinery, while converting from a light sweet crude to a heavy sour crude, and simultaneously bring both their refinery and products slate into compliance with World Bank environmental standards. Evaluated competing technologies to determine which was the which was the best production method for this refinery. Costs of production were determined for the alternative processing approach. Study included expanding the capacity of both the crude and vacuum units.

Led a team that prepared the detail process design of the offsites for a C4s plant. Units include flare system, vent gas recovery unit, loading facilities, storage tanks, and associated piping.

Led a team to prepare the FEED for the shift conversion unit within a coal to gasoline plant, utilizing coal gasification as the first step. Determined that the prior engineering firm had generated a process design that would not work, and corrected their work.

Prepared an Air Permit Application for a North Dakota Topping plant, based upon Bakken crude.

Led HAZOP on the offsites for a C4 processing and storage facility.

Engineering Design and Testing Corp, Houston, TX (6/05 – 3/07)

Consulting Engineer

Performed Forensic investigations into process incidents.

Technologies investigated included catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, HRSGs, and corrosion.

Determined the root cause for a process incident with a hydrocracker, where the hydrocracking reactor failed and slumped.

Confirmed the root cause for an FCC failure that occurred during the start up after Hurricane Rita.

Consultant, Missouri City, TX (10.01 – 6/05)

Consulted in the areas of process design and process economics, and project feasibility for Petrochemical and Refining processes and projects..

Prepared a feasibility study for the production of naphthalene by the hydrodealkylation of methyl naphthalenes for a client, including simulationg the process on Hysis.

Led the process design team for the conversion of chlorinated organic wastes into synthesis gas and muriatic acid by gasification.

Texmark Chemical, Galena Park, TX (6/99 – 10/01)

Director of Development

Managed the R&D and Quality Assurance/Control functions for the company.

Chemistries studied included azeotropic distillation, olefin alkylation, polymerization, and hydration of olefins.

Established the R&D function for the company

Designed and led the installation of a multipurpose chemical pilot plant.

Led effort to produce DCPD Ligands, a fine chemical used in the production of catalysts for polymer manufacture.

Supervised the detail engineering, construction, and installation of a DCPD cracking and alkylation plant. Commissioned, started up, and operated the resulting plant.

Plant Manager

Managed the plant.

Responsibilities included manufacturing of n-butanol, dicyclopentadiene, and dicyclopentadiene resins. Other responsibilities were maintenance of the plant, supervising plant revamps and improvements, and shipping and receiving.

Simulated plant on Hysys Commissioned and started up the debottlenecking modifications of a DCPD distillation plant. Operated the plant.

Pennzoil Products Co., The Woodlands, TX (4/88 – 6/99)

Staff Research Engineer

Performed Process Research, Process Development, and new product/process start ups for refining, white oil, and consumer products projects. Prepared design bases for plant capital projects.

Technologies researched included hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization, catalytic dewaxing, isodewaxing, dewaxing, natural gas to lube oil base stock conversion, white oil hydrogenation, blending and packaging of consumer products, alkylation, and oligomerization of light olefins into lube oil base stocks. Simulated the processes on Hysim.

Led team to perform HAZOP on the entire corporate pilot plant.

Led effort to confirm the effectiveness of hydrotreating (in a reactive distillation unit) for converting the diolefins in the gas stream into mono-olefins suitable for use in a sulfuric acid alkylation plant. Supervised the start up of the unit at the refinery.

Led effort to install a diesel fuel catalytic dewaxing and olefin saturation unit. Experimentally confirmed the process and supervised the start up of the unit.

Conceptually designed a plant for the production of lube oil base stocks from natural gas by gasification and Fisher-Tropsch chemistry. Prepared a feasibility study for the plant.

South Hampton Refining, Silsbee, TX (9/86-4/88)
