Professional Profile

Proven healthcare industry leader with a solid track record of increasing revenue and reducing costs for a variety of organizations. Skills include strategic positioning of company assets, developing new business, bringing physician leadership in sync with board management, streamlining the organization, and reaching out to community leaders and elected officials.

Professional Experience

President and CEO ER Hospitals, Phoenix, AZ 2010 to present

ER Hospitals, a Delaware LLC, is a new “micro” hospital concept seeking first round of venture capital funding.

CEO of Banner Health System and Surgery Centers, Phoenix, AZ 2008 to 2010

Banner Health is a regional healthcare system with hospitals and surgery centers in seven western states.

Responsible for the entire operations of 10 surgery center facilities in three states.

• Successfully turned around company operations and grew profits 16%, from approximately $12 million to $14 million by modernizing and stabilizing purchasing operations, streamlining staff efficiency and reporting accountability, involving physicians in the company’s marketing and facility planning, and by bringing together all levels of administration to identify the organization’s Critical Success Factors.

• Presided over total company revenue growth from $200 million to approximately $280 million, a 40% increase, after years of declining revenue prior to my arrival. Revenue increases were achieved by strategic acquisition of new facilities, hiring new and better trained administrators and reducing turnover, increasing the vital rapport between Board members, MECs, and physicians, and becoming directly involved with marketing efforts and partnership development.

CEO of Iasis Healthcare, Inc., Mesa, AZ and St. Petersburg, FL 2005 to 2008

Iasis Healthcare is a $2 billion healthcare system. Responsible for the start-up, development, recruitment, staffing and operation of a new 178-bed hospital in Mesa, AZ (Mountain Vista) and turned around an existing 307-bed hospital in St. Petersburg, FL (Palms of Pasadena).

• Mesa hospital: Achieved operating profitability within 5 months of opening with profits expanding from negative preconstruction levels to approximately $1.4 million a month, with annual revenues exceeding $460 million. Rapid growth in revenue and profit was due to developing new operational platforms for major programs like cardiology and open heart surgery, recruiting, hiring and credentialing over 400 physicians and 700 employees, implementing a variety of New Women’s Services, and opening a Level II ER Department with over 36,000 annual visits. Obtained 3-year accreditation, CMS and AZ State Health Department license in first survey.

• St. Petersburg hospital: Grew company profits 60% from $5 million to approximately $8 million and boosted revenues to over $260 million annually. Success factors include developing a new G.I. lab, recruiting a new executive team, improving outpatient processes, increasing outpatient visits by 12%, and directing new community outreach programs for the ER department resulting in a 15% increase of visits within the first year.

Sr. VP Operations, NW Region, Surgis, Inc., Olympia WA 1995 to 2005

Surgis is a Surgery Center System with over $300 million in revenue. Responsible for the operations of Multi-facility ambulatory surgery centers and a surgical hospital.

• Major accomplishments include achieving operating margins of over 40% at most facilities, developing three new outpatient centers, stabilizing daily business operations by hiring senior staff at each facility, conducting monthly operational reviews, and facilitating a work climate highly satisfying to both physicians and staff.

• Early achievements with Physicians Surgery Centers, which was acquired by Surgis in 2002, include taking the company from start-up to a thriving organization with over $30 million in annual revenue in 4.5 years.
