POSITION:

SENIOR RADIATION SAFETY SPECIALIST

Assisted in developing a comprehensive radiation safety program to comply with Federal and State Regulations and the conditions of City of Hope’s Radioactive Material License; which included developing a monitoring program involving ionizing radiation; implementing contamination control policies and procedures; Developed standard operating procedures for liquid scintillation counting; and the implementation and maintenance of a software program titled Environmental Health and Safety Assistant (EHS) developed by On-Site Systems located in Saint Louis, Missouri; Created and updated Standard Operating Procedures pertaining to shipping and receiving of radioactive materials in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

Duties/Responsibilities: Responsible to report any significant problems, accidents or violations of governmental regulations or institution standards to the Radiation Safety Officer; Respond to radiation safety emergencies/incidents; Radiation/contamination surveys; Shipping and receiving of radioactive materials; Radiation safety training to all personnel involved in handling radioactive materials; Environmental Health and Safety Assistant Program (EH&S) data input; Leak test of radioactive sources; Inventory control of radiation instruments/equipment; Bioassays involving urinalysis and thyroid uptake; Monitoring of patients administered radioactive materials; Guidelines using dose rate meters, Air sample measurements, Lead apron surveys, Cs-137 Mark-1 Irradiator operation/training instructor; Provide audits to ensure regulatory compliance of all licensed material/equipment as required by CCR Title 17, and 10CFR part 20 and part 35, and the conditions of the Radioactive Material License; Provide technical as well as regulatory compliance advice to personnel authorized to handle/possess radioactive materials. Assisted the Interventional Radiologist physician and surgical staff in the preparation and implementation of Y-90 Microsphere Brachytherapy (Sirtex, Therasphere). Provide radiation monitoring for patients who received a radiation therapeutic procedure such as Iodine –131. Provided training in the preparation and clearance of patient rooms where patients were administered a radioactive material that required a patient to stay in the hospital this also included training the immediate healthcare providers who would be attending. Provide radiation monitoring of patients administered Yttrium-90 Zevalin and Iodine-131Bexxar as an outpatient procedure. Provide radiation safety Assessment of Patient’s living and working conditions for those patients receiving radionuclide therapy and treated as outpatients. Perform Patient-Specific dose calculations for patient’s receiving radionuclide therapy as outlined in NRC NUREG-1556
