Summary
A senior Engineer/Technologist with more than 16 years experience designing, building and testing Space Borne Particle Instrumentation in a research setting. An additional 7 years working in a fast paced industrial setting designing Photo Detection Modules for Radiation Detection, Life Science applications and designing cost sensitive motion control products.
Roles
Design Engineering Technologist, ONExia INC 2008 – 2009
Responsible for the design, build, test and integration of a low cost Plasma Torch/CNC controller used in extremely harsh metal cutting environment. This was a 4-axis motion controller running off 115V or 230 VAC(700W) with additional electronics for I/O and power conversion. The controller is used within a complete gantry system and it is expected to lower the system cost by $1000 per unit. “Stand Alone Units” using embedded controller to read in user input (keypad), Display data and control servomotor via RS232.
Product Engineer, BURLE INDUSTRIES 2002 – 2007
Working within the module group, I was responsible for the detailed design, build and test of customer specific photo detection sensors used in various applications including Homeland Security(scintillation counting) and Life Science sectors (fluorescence based detection). The modules typically contained a Photo Multiplier Tube, low noise high voltage converter, signal conditioning circuits and digital interface. Design of bench top power High Voltage supply meeting CE safety and EMC requirements. I also redesigned a cost sensitive module along with successfully transferring this product to Matamoras, Mexico.
Technical Officer, University of Calgary 1995 – 2001
Technical Officer, National Research Council of Canada (HIA) 1985 – 1995
Part of a team involved in the design of various Space Flight Particle Instruments used in auroral research. The detectors used single channel electron multipliers, Micro Channel Plates, Solid State detectors along with various grids to measure particle energy and Time of Flight of ions. My responsibility was the design of the High Voltage Converters, Switch Mode Power Supply for the lower bus voltages, digital interface for High Voltage control/monitoring and general house keeping of the instrument – High Vacuum Calibration and Test of these instruments.
Duties
· Breadboard and debug prototypes to the component level.
