IBM

IT Architect and DB Migration Expert (Nov 1 2010 to present)

IT Architech adapt at database migrations and customizations specializing in Oracle, Oracle RAC, Oracle DataGuard, Data Warehousing, Data Modeling, Sybase, Sybase IQ, and Postgres on multiple different UNIX/Linux and Windows platforms. Traveling the world working on many different client sites and remotely dealing with many different databases and sizes, and under multiple deadlines for migrating databases and applications. Addressed ETL and data loading issues with a IBM client(s). For example, I was able to take a data load that was taking over 48 hours to load 150 gigabytes of raw data (such as flat files) (including data scrubbing), down to 2 hours with no change in hardware, just alternating the technical process yet maintaining the data quality.

Fastrieve ( a SRCP subsidary ), Overland Park, KS

Supr Manager of DB Services and Senior Database Arch ( January 2007 to Nov 1 2010 )

Responsibilities: As the Tech Lead of Oracle DBA team I have advised better techniques for large sqls, capacity planning, hired (and fired) DBAs in my team, mentored DBA to grow outside of the comfort level, and architected new data center for both production site and dr site (ongoing project). Ensure my management team was aware of the capacity planning and growth of the production systems, advised new technologies such as RAC, tablespace compression, archiving of data, index-organized tables, etc …… and ensured our new projects do not risk production up-time as I have watched our end connections grow from 700 2+ years ago to over 2300 end client connections.

Installed, patched, configured, implemented DDL, managed backups for a 2 terabyte Oracle 9i/10g databases (used space). The production database server has over 2000 end users, with 50 to 100 active users during normal business hours. On July 1st 2007, successfully upgraded the production databases from 9i to 10g r2 on Sun Solaris running on our Network Appliance network attached storage (NAS) systems. I was tasked as the lead Oracle DBA but also project manager for the 9i to 10g project. Installed, configuring, and tested a 4-node Oracle 11g RAC database for moving from a single node solution to a 4 node RAC solution in our production system (using ASM) on HP XP storage arrays (served up to my team as raw devices). Installed, configured, and patched Oracle Grid Control ( ie - Oracle Enterprise Manager ) for our current system and making the system available to the other DBAs on the team. Along with the duties above, I am part of an on-call schedule, tracking and addressing database performance problems, and maintaining the 2 standby (physical not logical) databases are being kept in-sych with the source production system to be in-line with our service level agreements (SLAs). Setup a brand new DataGuarded Oracle database in a remote location to provide faster SLA for our clients and did a full regression test using Netapp snapshots to snap the system back into DR site. I was tasked to see if our Fastrieve Application could be converted from Oracle 10g to a MySQL database (v5.0 utilizing the InnoDB storeage engine) on Red Hat Linux intel platform. Was able to convert most of the data, but because our application had hardcoded some unique Oracle commands we could not convert the full data set from Oracle to MySQL for use in a production setting. I worked on this project for over 2 months utilizing over 90% of my time on it.

Sungard, Kansas City, MO

Senior DBA ( July 2006 to January 2007 )

Responsibilities: Installed, configured, designed the system, and managed an 8 Oracle 10g r2 database system on IBM AIX p690. Brand new install and setup as well as educated 4 others DBAs who never had worked with Oracle before. The project was to migrate from a mainframe DB2 and flatfile system to Oracle 10g (“Rehosting Project). Sungard choose to placed the whole project on-hold after I was hired, and after the empty databases were up and running on newly purchased hardware.

Meridian IQ ( a YRC subsidary ), Overland Park, KS

Senior Oracle DBA ( Oct 2004 to July 2006 )

Responsibilities: Managed over 12 Oracle ( 8i, 9i, 10g ) Databases on five Sun Solaris Systems. Project Managed the 8i to 9i upgrade 2 years ago and did the full implemention from the DB standpoint since I was the only DBA in the company. Managed the release of several Oracle patch sets ( 9202 to 9204 and 9206 ) successfully with minimal downtime to the production systems. Implemented DDL, and DML and all changes to the databases for all application releases. Changed the backup strategy to use RMAN, and successfully proven the recovery procedures on test UNIX servers. Technically led a performance project to assist where in the application and database we could make changes with the least amount of risk, biggest gain, and lowest human cost ( ie – development lifecycle changes ). The performance project, for us, identified ( proven in a test lab ) that the use of bind variables would have biggest gain in performance with the least amount of cost. Implemented several standard approaches for DB administration, naming conventions, DB modeling ( ERDs ) standards, SQL Best practices, and other processes to assist the 20 plus development staffs. Assisted with over 200 change management activities from a database change standpoint ( implementing DDL, DML, and migrations ) over the last 2 plus years for all of MIQ. Worked over several weekends in support of these production changes ( often putting in 60 plus hour weeks ) to fit the deadline given to us by the business. Created, managed, supported a replicated Oracle 9i datamart db ( using both Materiailized Views and Replication groups in a single directional flow ) which is where the Business Objects software would report from throughout the day. It thus offloaded CPU cycles from our OLTP systems to a dedicated environment. Tested a proof-of-concept to switch from using materialized views and replication groups to Oracle Streams technology. Took part in weekly manager meetings to help communicate outwards any issues, problems, and project status's currently active. Investigated the feasibility of using Oracle 9i RAC at Meridian IQ, and created documention concerning cost of licensing, estimated cost of administration, cost of setup, and then presented that to a team to see if the estimated cost would outweight the benefits of having not only active failover, but better load balancing. Attended the 2005 ( September ) Open World Conference in California where I took part in several sessions.

Sprint / Sprint PCS / Local Telephone Div, Overland Park, KS

Senior Oracle/Sybase/Sybase IQ DBA (Aug 2000 to Oct 2004)

Responsibilities: Installed, upgraded, configured, supported, tuned, and implemented recovery on several large Oracle (version 7.3, 8i, 9i), Sybase (version 11), and Sybase IQ databases running on Sun UNIX, HP UNIX, and Windows NT/2000 Servers. Almost all of the projects that I managed were on large SMP UNIX systems running on either HP or Sun which utilized EMC or Hitachi Disk Systems (HDS) mostly utilitizing either RAID level 1 or 5 systems. I supported many projects including Sprint PCS’s new 3G rollout (for example – multimedia, and gaming), finance related projects such as fraud detection (a 800 gigabyte Oracle 8i database), and sales related project (commissions). Created and maintained korn shell Unix scripts for database monitoring, performance, alarming, backups, and other database related activities. Created several Microsoft Powerpoint presentations to the our staff on such things as Oracle’s 9i new features --- external tables, new security features, and new partitioning abilities. Administrated Oracle 9i App Server Portal for Sprint project needing support --- installed, configured, and troubleshot the product. Supported BMC SQL Backtrack for Oracle and Sybase database backups. Also, for those databases that were considered very large (greater then 1.2 terabytes) I helped write RMAN scripts for doing hot backups. I was able to save Sprint money in costly UNIX upgrades by giving the option of partitioning large tables (often those greater 100 million rows) into a strategy that would allow fast throuphput, but give better option of doing purging (DML activities) (for example, range partitioning and then subpartition by hash for performance). Another project I was assigned is CDPM which is Customer Data Privacy Management system which is Federally mandated to have our customer data in a more secure system. Sprint Corp’s Security Board invited me several times to get recommendations, and to give them regarding this project. CDPM is utilizing Oracle 9i, Sun UNIX, IBM Websphere, and since Sprint developed project I am also the physical data modeler (DA). Was part of a DBA team ( 4 of us ) that built, tested, and configured Oracle 9i RAC on Red Hat Linux servers in the Sprint Lab. This project took over 1 year to complete ( but was not active the whole time ) to do a full test of all functionality. We found it to have great HA capabilities although with a slightly larger DBA time role as a trade off.

McGladrey and Pullen, LLP, Des Moines, Iowa

Senior Consultant (October 1998 to August, 2000)

Responsibilities: Installed, upgraded, configured, tuned, wrote SQL statements against, created stored procedures, created triggers, created “other” DBMS objects, backed up and recovered several Oracle Servers utilizing version 7.3.3 and 8.1.5 (8i) on an IBM RS/6000 (UNIX) running AIX version 4.2 and Windows NT Server. Installed/configured Windows NT v4.0, Oracle connectivity software, Powerbuilder v5.0 and v6.0, Sybase SQL Anywhere, ODBC drivers, and other computer software. I have designed several different databases using PowerDesigner (Powersoft tool) to the 3rd normal form as well as reverse engineered different databases when entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) were not provided. Last project took almost a year in which I was the lead DBA. We “web-enabled” internally (intranet) all of Iowa’s 99 counties Oracle databases (court case information) into one Oracle 8i database running on a large AIX SMP machine using Oracle Application server. I did all the data modeling, security, bi-directional data flows and scheduling, tuning, memory allocation (over 1.7 gigabytes for the Oracle Server SGA), and backup/recovery. The database was over 300 gigabytes allocated, and over 190 gigabytes actually used data. One of the tables in the database was partitioned over 100 tablespaces. To web enable the data we used PL/SQL, some JAVA stored procedures, HTML, and Oracle Application Server version 4.0.7. Also, traveled around the nation to several client sites assisting them with many Oracle DBA projects such as Priceline.com and University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
