10b. Summary of Ph.D work
Validation and calibration CERES-wheat model was done for Tarai region of Uttarakhand by inputting data on soil of the area, crop under study and realized weather conditions for a period of thirty years from 01/01/1981 to 31/12/2010.The data related to the soil physical and chemical characteristics was entered into S build component of the model. The drainage upper limit, drainage lower limit and root growth factor required as input by the soil module were calculated by the S build itself.
The weather data i.e., daily maximum temperature, daily minimum temperature, rainfall and sunshine hours were collected and subsequently used in the prescribed format in the weatherman component of the crop model. The crop data pertaining to the information about the environment, management, treatments and simulation options were collected and fed into the X build component of the model.
With the required data pertaining to the wheat crop (cv. UP-2565) grown under optimum conditions, soil characteristics of the experimental site and climatic conditions of the Tarai region of the Uttarakhand, the CERES-wheat model was run many times. The genetic coefficients for wheat were calculated by the GENCALC sub-module of the CERES-wheat model. That set of the genetic coefficients which provided best agreement between the simulated and observed growth and yield of the wheat were selected. After running the model, and calculation of the genetic coefficients, the selected growth and yield parameters of wheat including days to anthesis, physiological maturity, harvest maturity, LAI, grain yield, biological yield, tillers metre-2, harvest index, root depth (m), grain number m-2 and soil moisture i.e., layer wise soil moisture content (%),extractable moisture (mm) and total soil moisture in profile (mm) were simulated and compared with the observed data that was collected through the field experiments conducted during rabi seasons of 2009-10 and 2010-11.
The CERES model was found to simulate the growth, development and yield of wheat cv. UP-2565 with overall reliable accuracy during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 crop seasons. In simulating most of wheat crop characters the model was observed to be more efficient in 2010-11 than 2009-10, which may be attributed to the increased crop duration, well distributed rainfall and relatively lower atmospheric temperature during 2010-11. The model simulated the layer wise soil moisture, extractable soil moisture and total soil profile moisture efficiently during both the seasons of study. The measured trend of decrease in the layer wise soil moisture was simulated well by the model. However, the extractable and total profile soil moisture was generally slightly overestimated. The irrigation treatments had significant effect on almost all the growth, development and yield parameters of wheat during 2009-10 as well as in 2010-11 crop season.
