Emergency Department Registration Clerk

The primary responsibility of the position was to obtain up to date information about ED patients such as their mailing address, telephone number, insurance, etc. I then entered the data into the Mercy computer system.

There was a strong emphasis on customer service in the ED. A lot of the patients and their families have special needs and concerns. It was my job to do what I could to make sure their needs were met and that their visit to St. Edwards was as pleasant as possible.

I was also responsible for other miscellaneous clerical duties such as filing paperwork, mailing letters, answering the telephone, etc.

I helped a Professor with his genetics research on scorpion DNA. In doing so, I gained experience doing several laboratory protocols. Examples include using the polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and bacterial cell culture.

The purpose of my work was to cut out and then insert segments of the scorpion DNA into bacteria cells. I isolated colonies of the bacteria to be sent to another facility for DNA sequencing.

I was required to keep a detailed lab book and to turn in a report for my Professors records.

Teaching Assistant

I was a teaching assistant in the biology and zoology labs my senior year of college. I set up the labs, helped to instruct the students, and graded their work.

Resident Assistant

I was put in charge of a number of students who lived in my section of a college residence hall. My primary job function was to monitor the safety and security of the students under my care.

I worked with other Residence Life staff in order to achieve our goal of effectively managing a residence hall in a way that made it an enjoyable place to live.

As a RA I was a leader for other students to look up to. This meant playing several roles all at once. I was a friend, mentor, mediator, rule enforcer, and a valuable source of information about the activities and policies of Arkansas Tech University.
