Plant Manager, Chemical Manufacturing & Technology (2007 - 2011)
Promoted in 2007 to this director level global manager role responsible for chemical manufacturing and technology. Duties and accomplishments included:
• Managing strategic global projects to consolidate and improve global chemical manufacturing operations to build operational synergies and focus basic strengths in production and R&D. Closed and moved operations in Mexico City during 2007. Supported operations and new product development projects in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Colombia, Venezuela, France and the United Kingdom.
• Directed the design and construction of the world's largest writing instrument ink manufacturing facility. This new world-class global manufacturing and technology center is located on a 55 acre campus in middle Tennessee. Construction was completed on time and under budget in November, 2009.
• Performing all activities associated with the successful operation and control of the global manufacturing and technology functions representing 1000+ finished SKUs supporting $1.2 billion dollars in SCOGS. Responsibilities include complete P&L and all associated manufacturing KPIs (Inventory, Safety, Variance Control, Productivity, Customer Service).
• Interacting with local, state and federal officials along with political leaders to facilitate permit approvals and foster goodwill to support environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
• Directing innovation, line extensions, productivity improvements, new product scale up and launch activities working cross-functionally with other parts of the organization as required.

Plant Manager, Liquid Manufacturing & Technology Center (2004 - 2007)
Promoted to expand the scope and function of chemical manufacturing to include pilot laboratory and product development activities. Expanded manufacturing and global shipping activities in Tennessee by consolidating global chemical operations. Added laboratory functions and staff. Support from these expanded manufacturing and laboratory operations included the worldwide chemical component supply for Newell Rubbermaid’s Office Products Group. Duties and accomplishments included:
• Directed the design and establishment of pilot and development laboratory functions at the LMTC to support R&D and other strategic cross-divisional chemical manufacturing requirements.
• Developed global strategies to leverage core competencies and intellectual property in chemical manufacturing and technology.
• Reduced the average standard cost of all chemical products produced and supplied to global affiliates by 9% from 2004 – 2007, despite a 61% increase in global chemical commodity base prices during the same period.
• Performed all functions associated with the successful operation and control of a separate chemical business unit and laboratory function representing 720 finished SKUs supporting $824 million dollars in SCOGS.
• Consolidating and optimizing different process technologies from multiple locations in North America, Asia and Europe while managing the construction of new manufacturing, office and laboratory sites. This involved the closure of operations in the U.K., France, and Germany.
• This position required extensive international travel.

Operations Manager, Ink Manufacturing Center (2002 – 2004)
Hired specifically to orchestrate the start-up of a chemical/ink manufacturing center in Tennessee to support North American writing instrument assembly operations for Newell Rubbermaid’s billion dollar marker and pen division (Sanford LP). Duties and accomplishments included:
• Directing the design and construction of the plant along with the creation of all operational processes, supply chain functions, QC, inventory management systems, regulatory compliance programs, etc. as well as the development of appropriate process industry metrics and cost standards.
• Reduced average standard cost of products produced by 28% from 2002 – 2004.
• Directing the new plant through significant volume growth while supporting assembly operations in the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia.
• Closing and relocating chemical manufacturing operations in California and Illinois.
• Acting as the subject matter expert supporting global assembly operation consolidation and set-up in India, China and Mexico.
• Performing all functions associated with the successful operation and control of a separate business unit representing 350 finished SKUs supporting $412 million dollars in SCOGS. Functional oversight responsibilities include:
P&L responsibility, process improvement and engineering, regulatory compliance, customer relations/technical support, ISO 9000/Quality system management, budget/capital planning and cost control, human resource oversight to include recruiting, training and development.
• Directing subordinate managers in the development of programs and systems to be used to control and measure the new ink plant operations which included:
• Managerial accounting and financial metrics
• Best Practices Implementation (i.e. “5S”, PM systems, Lean Manufacturing)
• Plant Operator training and certification programs

Film and Laminating Adhesive Systems (2001 - 2002)
• The 2000 merger of two multinational specialty chemicals companies, Ato Findley Inc. and Bostik Inc. (subsidiaries of the Total Fina Elf Oil & Gas Group – Paris) resulted in the creation of a new (project focused) position. This position was responsible for optimizing manufacturing operations, quality engineering/assurance, regulatory compliance oversight and new business development. Projects included:
• Leading a team to develop a new product introduction program
• Developing strategies for the growth and optimization of existing businesses
• Facilitating the integration of corporate ISO 9002 quality systems
• Working with major customers to facilitate relationships between “process managers” to support team selling
• Directing Film Adhesive manufacturing and quality departments in a unionized plant environment
• Overseeing risk management and EPA/OSHA compliance efforts
• Recommending process engineering improvement initiatives
• This position held seats on corporate “cross-functional” teams and required some travel. The position reported to the Director of Manufacturing for Industrial Adhesives.
Plant Manager - Battle Creek Operations (Ato Findley, Inc.1996 – 2001 )
• Directed the operations of an industrial adhesive manufacturing facility for Ato Findley, Inc. Duties included all functions associated with the successful operation and control of a separate manufacturing business unit that annually manufactured and shipped over 5 million pounds of specialty adhesives to global industrial application customers.
• Functional responsibilities included: process improvement and engineering, regulatory compliance, customer relations/technical support, ISO 9000/Quality system management, budget/capital planning and cost control, facility maintenance management, human resource oversight to include recruiting, training and development.
• Achievements: Assumed control in 1996, improved profitability by over 560% by the end of 2000 while at the same time doubling plant capital investment and ROI. Successfully guided the plant through ISO 9002 certification and registration in 1997. Improved the plant safety record while increasing individual worker productivity through more effective use and design of material handling and process control equipment. Reduced cycle time for batch manufacturing by 49% by overseeing the re-design of liquid package filling stations and by authoring a standardized dilution rate extrapolation process. During a series of visits in 1999, provided engineering oversight and assistance at key strategic customer’s plant which resulted in a 42% decrease in their downtime saving the customer over $450,000 a year in scrap reduction.
Plant Production Superintendent ( Findley Adhesives, Inc. 1995-96)
• Responsible for the direction of plant production staff. Duties included hiring, firing, training and counseling staff, trouble-shooting production in batch style liquid manufacturing, programming and maintaining PC based information and control systems/networks, plant engineering and regulatory compliance. Hired and trained to assume plant management position. Findley Adhesives acquired by Ato Chem S.A. (Paris) on January 1, 1996.

Production Supervisor
• Responsible for the direction of a unionized labor force with a first tier supplier to General Motors. Duties included training, counseling and discipline of production workers as well as overseeing line set-up. Additional duties included trouble-shooting production of extruded plastic body side moldings for passenger cars. Other responsibilities included QS 9000 compliance/control, safety management and inventory control.
