A rewarding and successful career in ministry, education, administration, pastoral care, counseling, mercy ministry, missions, curriculum development, and program management motivates me to bring my commitment to your church as Missions Pastor. I offer you 14 years experience, dedication and talent and motivating church members, elders, deacons, and staff, guiding and administering church members to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and hurting world.

Throughout my career, I have implemented projects, streamlined workflow, and prioritized and handled multiple tasks. I have started and developed new programs to address ministerial needs. My determination in implementing ministry to address these situations was fueled by my desire to fulfill the Great Commission.

My commitment and determination have also allowed me to do the following:

Provide strategic and tactical planning, giving direction, leadership and day-to-day management to ministries

Set standards and goals to attain results, establishing policies and procedures to implement them

Develop ministries and monitor progress, training and motivating staff to carry out ministries

Maintain records and prepare budgets in accordance with allotted funds

Cultivate church partnerships with organizations in the community to enhance ministry

Win the trust and respect of the church staff, elders, deacons, and laity by being honest to all.

I was raised in a Christian home in small town Indiana and participated in all the children and youth activities provided by my fundamentalist Baptist church. However, as a young adult, I experienced a crisis of faith where I questioned the beliefs of my youth. During this period I vacillated between isolation from God and the church to deep interest in a variety of spiritual expressions. It was during this period that I began to explore Reformed theology, and was able to bring my questions and concerns to a PCA pastor. He patiently answered my questions and addressed my objections. At the end of this period of spiritual searching I applied to, and was accepted at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL. At the beginning of my seminary training I had not settled on a denominational preference, but approximately one year later my wife and I began to attend a small PCA church in Birmingham, Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church. We soon joined the church and it was at OMPC that I began to use my spiritual gifts. I made many mistakes along the way, but as the church grew, from 200 to 2600, I grew in the application of my gifts of knowledge, teaching, care, and mercy. After graduation from Beeson, I was ordained into Evangel Presbytery and became Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care, Counseling and Mercy. My experience in mercy ministry and mission trips opened my eyes to the need to provide Christian education to the underprivileged, both in the US and internationally. With this sense of calling I pursued a PhD in Educational Psychology at the University of Alabama, with an emphasis in moral psychology and cognitive anthropology. While working on my PhD, I started a Hispanic Ministry at OMPC that included an ESL program, and taught classes at a local shelter for women released from prison. As I began my dissertation research, I wanted to explore the moral identity of teachers of the underprivileged, so for two years I worked closely with an inner city elementary school as a volunteer tutor, researcher, and as a pastor who led mercy projects to paint the school, provide back to school uniforms, and Christmas presents for the children.

As an ordained pastor in the Evangel Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America, I have undergone thorough examinations of my views and knowledge of scripture and theology. As an educator and a pastor, I believe the command to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” provides the challenge to incorporate both missions and education in the Great Commission. I passionately believe that discipleship provides opportunities to present the gospel to all, and I believe that the Good News of Jesus Christ should be made available to the poor as well as the privileged. Therefore, I believe that Christian discipleship should be incorporated into the church’s missiological strategy as we present the gospel of grace to a lost and hurting world. This belief translates into my preaching and teaching, where I emphasize the sovereignty of God and the gospel of grace for both our justification and our sanctification.

As associate pastor at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church (PCA), Birmingham, Alabama has provided me administrative opportunities and awareness of the needs of church members as they prepare for ministry. My experience in education includes involvement in both private and public schools. I served on the School Board of the Westminster School at Oak Mountain, Birmingham, Alabama, a private Christian school ministry of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church. I have also worked closely with the Birmingham City School System both as a researcher for my dissertation and as a volunteer tutor for inner city school children. I also developed a ESL program serving the needs of Hispanics in the Shelby County Alabama area. I have also assisted a women’s shelter in preparing their residents to achieve their GED diplomas through intelligence testing.

I have actively participated in working with the poor and oppressed in the Birmingham, AL area. My experience includes starting a Hispanic Community Center which currently serves 400 weekly; providing meals and educational programs for homeless shelters for men, women, and children; organizing and leading disaster relief responses in 2001 for the Gujarat India earthquake and 2005 for Hurricane Katrina. I have also led twelve medical and educational mission trips to India and Peru. My work with the Hispanic community in Birmingham has provided valuable political experience in working with city officials for building a park and Mexican and Columbian officials in assisting undocumented Hispanic families to obtain passports for their home countries.

In addition to my work with the poor, I oversaw the Pastoral Care and Counseling ministry at OMPC, and developed the procedures now in place for the administration of restoration and discipline of church members. During my ministry at OMPC I also administrated adult Sunday School and adult small group ministries, as well as a men’s ministry program. Earlier in my ministry career I served as a youth leader, music minister, and children’s pastor.

My doctorate in Educational Psychology / Human Development, years of experience in qualitative research, experience as a manager in a church setting, experience as a social worker, and work with the poor and homeless as a pastor provides me valuable education and experience in confronting the challenges of poverty.

My dissertation, “Moral Identity of Teachers of the Underprivileged”, explored the integration of moral motivation and moral behavior in committing to teach in the inner city schools of Birmingham, AL. My research utilized both quantitative (using SPSS) and qualitative research techniques and provided new understanding of the moral differences between inner city and suburban school teachers. This research interest was motivated by seeking to understand the motivation and character of individuals who commit their lives to serve the poor.

I bring to the position experience in working with government officials during disaster relief, managing a staff dedicated to mercy and relief work, and mobilizing volunteers both locally and internationally. I also bring the academic experience of research utilizing cultural anthropology to understand cognitive domains of underprivileged people and those who work with them.

I would welcome the opportunity to serve God through your church as Missions Pastor. Thank you for considering my application for this position.
