Microbiological Proficiency

• Microbiological techniques: Microscopy and staining Techniques, Bacterial growth curve, Biochemical identification of microbes, Selective Isolation of different microbes from various sources including clinical samples, Enumeration of microbes, Biofilm production and quantification, Quality Control studies of different media and reagents.

• Instruments worked with: Autoclave, Centrifuges, Colorimeters, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Nanospectrophotometer, pH meter, Lab scale Fermenter, Lyophilizer, Colony Counter, Laminar Air Flow, Shakers, Electrophoresis unit especially Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis(PFGE), Thermal Cycler, Gel Documentation system and ELIZA Plate Reader.

• Molecular Biological Techniques: Genomic DNA and RNA Extraction from microbes, Plasmid Isolation, Ligation, Transformation, PCR-Virulence, Serotyping and RAPD, Restriction and Ligation, PFGE.

Work Experience

• Worked at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Dona Paula in Dr. Chandralata Raghukumar’s Marine Biotechnology laboratory for 2 weeks doing analysis of water samples (2006)

• Worked as a lecturer at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa Goa, Microbiology Department for 2 years, from 2006-2008. Lectured and conducted laboratory experiments in Microbiology, for the under graduates students of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

• Worked as a Junior Research Fellow (Microbiologist) in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Complex for Goa at the Animal Science Department, Public Health Section under the guidance of Dr. S.B. Barbuddhe, Senior Research Scientist on a prestigious Project ‘’InGeLis’ - Indo-German Consortium for Epidemiology and Comparative Genomics of Listeria’ for 2 years 2008-2010; ‘InGeLis’: is a project funded by the Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and the International bureau of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

• Worked as an Assistant Professor at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa Goa, in the Microbiology Department for the academic year, 2010-2011. Taught theory papers as well as conducted laboratory experiments in Microbiology for the first and second year undergraduate students. Besides, taught environmental studies for the second semester to the students of the F.Y. B.A. and B.Com.

• Worked as an Assistant Professor at Indira Gandhi National Open University at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa Goa, Department of Microbiology for the academic year 2010-2011. Taught a paper in Food Microbiology for Masters of Science degree in dietetics and food service management Course.

• Core Member of the ‘InGeLis’ team that successfully created a fully functional India’s first ever web based Listerial Database (www.icargoa.res.in/ilcd)

• Designed a virulence PCR based Listeria diagnostic kit

• Trained and conducted practical sessions for various students as well as veterinarian doctors from various Universities in India on microbiological and molecular biology techniques.

• Ph.D. research on ‘Isolation and Characterization of Listeria from seafood and hypersaline environments’ - July 2010 - July 2011
