PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
PNM RESOURCES (First Choice Power and EnergyCo, LLC Business Units), Irving, TX 2005–2008
Senior Analyst, Portfolio Management Group
Directed the natural gas fundamentals analyses for the Texas-based operations of this $2-billion electric utility holding company.
• Developed a highly accurate model to forecast the weekly Energy Information Administration (EIA) natural gas storage inventory report. Forecast performance consistently ranked in the top 5% of the weekly Bloomberg survey (25 leading energy analysts) over a period of 135+ weeks of benchmarked performance.
• Generated highly accurate forecasts for end-of-season inventories of storage injection and storage drawdown seasons. Forecasts consistently accurate to within 2% of the EIA’s final season-ending value.
• Produced natural gas forward curves using a comprehensive supply/demand balance sheet approach.
• Constructed a regression-based weather-driven natural gas consumption model to forecast residential/commercial daily consumption down to the state level.
• Prepared weekly inventory forecasts for crude, gasoline, distillate, and refinery capacity utilization. Consistently outperformed the Bloomberg survey.
• Utilized the PROMOD production cost model to develop capacity dispatch forecasts and revenue generation forecasts to evaluate EnergyCo’s generation acquisition and development opportunities in the ERCOT market including: Twin Oaks (305 MW coal-fired acquisition), Altura CoGen (614 MW cogeneration acquisition), and Cedar Bayou IV (550 MW combined-cycle joint-venture development project with NRG).
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF CEARA, Fortaleza, Brazil 2002–2005
Visiting Instructor of Energy Economics – Mechanical Engineering Department
Developed and taught Energy Economics and Energy Transportation/Storage Logistics courses at this premier university in Brazil.
• Taught courses in Portuguese to engineering graduate students and 4th year engineering students. Courses were funded by PetroBras and the National Petroleum Agency.
• Independent energy consultant to Companhia Energética do Ceará (COELCE) - Electric utility company with 2.4 million customers in the northeast of Brazil.
UNOCAL MIDSTREAM & TRADE, Sugar Land, TX 2001-2002
Senior Market Analyst – Natural Gas, Crude Oil, and Refined Products Midstream Assets
Directed the natural gas fundamentals analyses for the North American midstream operations of this integrated oil company.
• Utilized the GPCM gas pipeline model to develop accurate natural gas forward curves and basis differential forecasts.
• Employed GPCM and the Lukens Storage Valuation Advisor model to optimize the company’s gas storage portfolio and to analyze gas storage development opportunities including the 5 Bcf Keystone Storage facility in West Texas.
• Developed robust simulation scenarios with GPCM and SVA to assist the risk management group in setting natural gas hedging triggers and limits.
• Participated in multi-disciplinary teams to develop Unocal’s business strategies in the natural gas, crude oil, LNG, and natural gas liquids midstream business units.
INTERGEN NORTH AMERICA, L.P., (Shell-Bechtel Joint Venture), Houston, TX 2000–2001
Senior Associate, Strategic Market Analysis Group
Directed the natural gas fundamentals analyses for the North American operations of this global merchant generation developer.
• Utilized the GPCM model to develop forward curves for natural gas prices and basis differentials and to prepare gas market analyses of NERC regions to screen for merchant plant development opportunities.
• Produced the natural gas forward curves in support of the financing of three “greenfield” development combined-cycle merchant plants valued at $1.7-billion (2,872 MW of capacity) and the development of two “fast-tracked” simple-cycle peaking plants valued at $90-million (225 MW of capacity).
• Developed electricity forward curves with the Prosym production cost model for screening of development projects.
KINDER-MORGAN, INC., Houston, TX 1997–2000
Senior Business Analyst – Natural Gas Pipeline of America (NGPL)
Ran the natural gas fundamentals models and market & financial analyses of offshore assets for this interstate pipeline company.
• Utilized GPCM to forecast pipeline throughput volumes, storage utilization, and revenue generation for NGPL and other Kinder-Morgan pipelines.
• Evaluated gas pipeline expansion projects under varying supply/demand scenarios with the GPCM simulation model.
• Employed GPCM to perform volumetric analyses (based on several weather scenarios) to establish values of costless collar weather derivatives for hedging the NGPL fuel receipts to stabilize cash flows.
• Prepared the financial models and Authorization for Expenditure for NGPL’s 20% participation in the $95.6-million East Breaks deepwater natural gas gathering system for Exxon’s Diana-Hoover gas production. Also worked as the Business Analyst on a multi-disciplinary team representing NGPL’s interests in the HIOS, UTOS, and Stingray offshore pipelines.
