PIXE Laboratory Director/QC Manager

In charge of day-to-day operations of PIXE laboratory.

Responsibility for installing/maintenance/operation of lab and relevant equipment and time management with regard to sample priority.

Hire, train, and supervise all lab personnel.

All lab personnel are under the supervision of the lab director, which includes work schedules and work assignments. Responsible for training new personnel on sample prep, methodology of PIXE, instrument analysis and maintenance. Conduct personnel reviews to discuss area of improvement and/or concern.

Analyze and interpret PIXE data to generate reports for clients based on sample type and/or special request.

Utilize GUPIX program to quantify concentration of various elements found in a sample. Apply statistical methods to determine whether to include trace elements in a report. Note and explain any interferences of energy lines with sales personnel and/or clients.

Responsible for inventory of all lab equipment and supplies.

Contact vendors on a regular basis to order basic lab supplies, i.e. beakers, pipets, filters, polycarbonate tubes, etc. Schedule gas deliveries as needed depending on workload. Constantly investigating new equipment that would increase production of PIXE laboratory.

In charge of all QC aspects of the lab.

Maintain regular QC samples to verify blank values and instrument validity. Organize all QC records to easy access. Maintain all personnel training information and all laboratory procedures. Update and revise SOP’s as needed.

First-line of communication for sales personnel or client questions/assistance.

Interface daily with sales personnel on ability of instrument to analyze a particular sample and energy interferences. Communication to answer client questions via phone and email. Direct line of contact with company President and Financial Officer/HR Manager.

Perform standard tests on water samples sent from throughout the state,

test include: Conductivity, pH, acidity, acidity digestion, alkalinity, chloride, fluoride, IC, TOC(total organic carbon), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, ortho-phosphrus, settable solids, & turbidity.

Collect and report all data to direct supervisor via a LabWorks program.

Organize, batch, and tag all samples, flag any quality control outliers, document any sample preparation changes.

Work directly with outside vendors on instrument maintenance and setup.

Worked one-on-one with ManTech vendor representative to effectively install a TISAB pump to apparatus to create new calibration and analysis method for fluoride, which was a cost reduction application; and learn various capabilities not currently utilized.

Implement new ammonia method, procedure updates to minimize contamination of system, while working directly with Westco vendor representative.

Implement methods detailed in Standard Operating Procedures and

make changes when necessary. Currently have suggested modifications to six SOP’s, all were implemented.
