Ensured that objectives were achieved at the lowest cost consistent with quality requirements. Established and maintained a “best-in-class” mindset throughout the plant’s quality and manufacturing support organization. Manager, Crankshaft Production Unit. Managed both 45 hourly and 3 salaried personnel including technicians, engineering, supervisory and maintenance personnel. Responsible for production, personnel, scheduling, quality, machinery, and tooling.

Increased departmental labor efficiency by 19%, which reduced planned headcount by 3 people, saving over $75,000.

Increased machine efficiency and utilization by 20%, reduced average changeover times by 68% (utilizing SMED techniques), that enabled WIP reduction of $350,000. Reduced scrap by 34%.

Brenco Inc., Petersburg, VA - 3/89 to 12/95

Manufacturing Manager / Grinding Supervisor - 2nd Shift (6/95 - 12/95). Senior on-site manager during non-core operating hours. Responsible for (6) salaried, direct reports and a total workforce of 200 employees. Selected individuals for job openings, identified potential areas of personnel, and equipment / tooling shortages. Responsible for the daily accomplishments of plant schedules, identified items requiring special emphasis / corrective action. Monitored safety, productivity, quality.

Employee absenteeism, turnover, and required overtime were well below company averages.

Heat Treat Supervisor (12/94-6/95). Worked 7-day rotating shift schedule. Responsible for production, scheduling, quality, personnel and equipment maintenance. Department continually exceeded production output and efficiency goals. Employee absenteeism and turnover were well below company averages.

Manufacturing Engineer (3/89-12/94). Managed medium to large-scale projects and multi-discipline project teams. Responsible for investigation and integration of advanced manufacturing techniques and equipment. Responsible for plant/manufacturing cell layout and material flow. Identified, selected, justified, coordinated and implemented capital projects. Responsible for methods and tooling documentation and standardization, metalworking coolants, filtration systems, cleaners, and rust preventatives.

Specified, developed, installed and integrated automated bearing cone assembly machines, yielding higher quality assemblies and a labor savings of over $90,000 per year (re-assigned (1) employee per shift per assembly line).

Specified and implemented new fixturing material that eliminated scoring rejects and significantly reduced tooling requirements, yielding an annual savings of over $15,000.

Virtually eliminated problems with in-process and post-process rust on production parts through the evaluation and testing of cleaners and rust preventatives. Generated annual savings of over $20,000.

Manufacturing Engineer. Responsible for the start-up of a flexible CNC turning cell, directed the activities of CNC programmers, tooling engineers and maintenance personnel; product costing; project management, including capital equipment selection, justification, and implementation; facilities management, including environmental compliance, building and grounds, and HVAC.

Flexible CNC turning cell reached 100% of targeted production in 2nd full month of production, 115% in 3rd month, and 135% in 5th month.

Developed / implemented coolant recycling program that generated $32,000 yearly cost savings.

Robert Bosch Power Tool Corporation, New Bern NC - 9/85 to 11/87

Manufacturing Engineer. Responsible for the development of methods, tooling and fixturing for cost-efficient production; programmed CNC machining centers and turning centers; cost reduction identification and implementation; capital equipment selection, justification, and integration; product costing. One of two engineers selected for advanced training at sister facilities in Stuttgart, Germany and Solothurn, Switzerland.

Introduced polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tooling for the machining of non-ferrous components. Introduced PVD-coated carbide inserts for milling and threading/grooving of ferrous components.

Specified and implemented multi-station fixturing that resulted in a cost savings of $80,000 per year.

Yale Norton Inc., Monroe NC - 6/83 to 9/85

Manufacturing Engineer. Responsible for product and process improvements of multiple lock and door closer lines. Standardized door closer arms, generating a $30,000 annual cost savings. Computerized key records department, including the development of a complicated masterkeying program.
