Senior Design Project: January-May 2012

Granulation of Ammonium Sulfate - Engineering Project Manager Chicago, IL

Supervisor/Mentor: Jerry Palmer (Ambitech Engineering Corp)

Supervising a 4 member undergraduate senior team on the design of a simulated $50MM Ammonium Sulfate Plant that produces 730 tons per day of granulated Ammonium Sulfate.

• Achieved an annual profit of $6MM on a 150,000 sq.ft. Ammonium Sulfate plant.

• Conducted 32 mass and energy balances on streams around a Swenson DTB crystallizer, centrifuge, coolers, dryers, granulator, tanks and screens using problem solving skills.

• Reduced airborne Ammonium Sulfate emissions to .02 lb/ton in order to guarantee an EPA emission factor rating of an “A”.

• Designed a basic P&ID and plant layout for the Ammonium Sulfate plant.

• Saved roughly $200,000 by identifying cost-saving opportunities when baghouses were integrated within the plant process flow diagram.

• Conducted sample plant trials on Aspen.
