Experience in machine design and product development with creativity and innovation.
Hands on experience at inspecting and troubleshooting electro-mechanical products and production equipment. Wisconsin Professional Engineer E-30572 and Air Force certified Research, and Development Engineer.
Professional Experience
Therma-Stor, Madison WI 2008 to 2012
Manufacture of refrigerated dehumidifiers, dairy farm equipment and energy recovery systems.
Manufacturing Engineer - Technical responsibility for the production lines and to improve the quality of the products and reduce assembly costs. Back-up leader during absences of Engineering Manager.
- Determined weld quality problems was caused by variations in the chemistry of the steel. Implemented procedures to check steel chemistry as part of the incoming inspection.
- Designed, fabricated and wrote PLC program for a robotic appliance lifter that used pneumatics to grab, lift, rotate and position the cabinet during assembly which increased production rate on the line and reduced man-hour cost per appliance.
- Provide input during design of new appliances to insure they could be assembled quickly without custom tools and continually meet quality standards.
- Teamed with quality, product engineer and part supplier to resolve a customer reported problem with a sometime leaking hose quick disconnect fitting. Developed test to verify fix to the leaky fitting.
- Using AutoCAD I designed a machine to tip over and set up an appliance to perform life cycle testing of components inside the appliance. I selected the components and wrote the PLC program.
- Selected pumps, valves, heater and wrote PLC program for an automatic filling and pressure testing machine used on the production line of a heater unit that used a propylene glycol/water mixture.
- Provided onsite expertise to troubleshoot and repair high tech wrapping and strapping machines in short periods of time to return the lines to operational status.
- Using Lean concepts I researched, selected and directed the installation of automatic packaging equipment. Determined modifications needed to plant layout to accommodate the machine in a cellular arrangement. Designed custom interface fixtures to use the automatic packing equipment.
- Designed and fabricated a fixture that located and clamped in place a rotomolded plastic housing for an appliance on a milling machine so a counter bored hole could be made for a leveling vial that was glued in the hole. The vial was used to level the machine during field installation.
United Industries, Beloit WI 1995 to 2008
Mulit-million dollar international company manufacturing stainless steel tubing.
Manufacturing Engineer, Plant Engineer, Assistance Chief Engineer- Responsible for the production equipment used to produce welded stainless steel tubing. Maintained plant facility and utility systems.
- Determined product size variations were caused by temperature changes of the tooling from the start of the production day to the end of the day. Designed new process water cooling system with tighter temperature controls that reduced tooling temperature changes during the production day.
- Using stress analysis and fatigue design principles I determined the cause of pinch roll gear boxes failures. I then designed drive changes that dampened the varying loads that caused the problems.
- Designed and fabricated an automated machine that would polish the inside of long length stainless steel tubes to A3 dairy standards and taught to operators how to use the machine.
GLENN D. CURTISS
- Justifed adding roof insulation during major project to re-roof the production plant based on the energy saving during the heating season.
- Investigated and justified purchase of state of the art vision systems and controls to automate laser and tig welding processes. Designed modifications to plant lay out to fit the new equipment and preformed initial operator training and maintained record of training and training material.
-Directed maintenance technicians in troubleshooting and repairing PLC control automatic tube cut off machines and tube handling machines.
- Team member that wrote major portions the Quality plan dealing with the engineering of a product that lead to ISO 9001 certification for the company.
- Designed and fabricated fixtures needed to install a process to thermal spray aluminum on the weld seam of stainless steel tubes. Designed interface controls to connect sprayer to the mill controls that started and controlled the tube mill that formed and welded the tube.
-Designed upgrade to digital length gage that eliminated variations in measurements caused by operator measuring techniques.
Wisconsin Department Occupational Health and Safety 1994 - 1995
Administrative Officer – Managed staff responsible for enforcement of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules on working with asbestos and lead based paint.
- Evaluated and approved private contractor’s use of engineering controls to mitigate hazards from asbestos and lead paint abatement projects.
- Determined hand held spectrum analyzers did not have the resolution or accuracy needed to meet the threshold detection levels set in the EPA requirements.
U.S. Air Force 1974 - 1994
Officer, Engineering Manager, Project Manager, Operations Manager, Development Engineer, Maintenance Engineer and Facility Engineer
- Selected and installed remote reporting explosive gas detection system used in a facility that stored liquid rocket propellants.
- Directed emergency facility and machinery repairs after accidents. Team member that determined the accident causes and prepared recommendations to prevent future accidents.
- Wrote service contract statements of work for maintaining air-conditioning and heating systems used to simulate altitude conditions for testing aircraft engines and rocket motors.
- Responsible for around the clock facilities operations and maintenance activities that supported testing of the next generation of aircraft engines and rocket motors used to launch satellites into orbit. Performed on site inspections of work progress, adjusted work priorities and schedules to meet larger objectives.
- Developed operating budgets for the maintenance and improvement projects for aircraft test facilities.
- Reviewed missile site water chilling system, recommended and designed and wrote the contract to replace cooling towers with refrigerated chillers to save water, eliminate water treatment chemicals and reduce maintenance man-hours.
- Directed a team that built a test station that took the aircraft computers and ran them through simulated flight conditions to test the ability of the computer software to function correctly. This test station saved lives and test aircraft and expensive flight hours to test the functionality of the computer programs.
