Duration May 2009 – Aug 2009

Organization Evaluation of New UK-WHO Low Birth Weight Growth chart for Preterm, Low birth weight & sick neonates

Duration 2006

Synopsis After publication of new growth standards by WHO: The Department of Health asked the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) about the relevance of WHO growth standards in UK population for which a joint committee was set up for discussing various issues regarding implications of new standards. Hence after the discussion it was concluded that it was acceptable to adopt new standards between ages of 2 weeks and 24 months as very little difference was found between UK 1990 and who charts in terms of length or height at any age after birth. Due to lack of preterm section in new growth charts, a need for separate charts for the preterm infants was strongly felt as the new standards had substantial implications for plotting extremely low birth weight infants <32 weeks. Thus special charts for preterm infants were designed with help of neonatal group. The aim behind the study was to analyse how well the health staff understood growth charts and errors made by them and the overall impact on clinical decisions. After comparing new charts to old charts it was found that new charts were quite popular among the medical respondents. New charts showed the reduction in errors regarding calculation and plotting of gestational ages and the accuracy of marking up the date boxes improved with each phase.
