Farm Hand, Black Oak Holler Farm, Frasiers Bottom, WV Fall 2010

• Research and extension based farm in rural West Virginia raising Ossabaw, Farmer’s Hybrid and Wild Boar crosses on pasture and barley and finishing in the woods on acorns. Main product is a long (2 year) cured ham which is being marketed to high-end restaurants in Washington, DC and Boston. Research includes genetics, effects on forest stand, and changes in meat quality. Duties include: feeding, maintaining water systems, tractor work, fence maintenance, veterinary care and castrations, and daily rounding up and accounting for grower pigs in the woods. Routine problem solving and disaster relief that goes along with trying to raise feral animals in the woods and contain them within fences and under management.

Farm Hand, Jericho Settler’s Farm, Jericho, VT May – September 2010

• Integrated organic vegetable and pasture-raised livestock farm located 15 miles from Burlington, VT. In charge of pasture-raised swine and broiler operations (this includes daily feed, water, and responsibility for herd health, as well as fence movement, pasture rotation management, veterinary care, fence maintenance, and farrowing attention). Also involved with water maintenance and fence and herd movement for grass-fed cattle and sheep herds and care and collection of pastured layer flock. Vegetable production includes everything from tomatillos to potatoes. Extensive hoop house tomato production as well as flower and herb garden. Markets include a 165 member CSA, Burlington Farmer’s Market, farm stand and local restaurants and grocery stores. Duties included all aspects of operation: greenhouse production, transplanting, tractor work, harvesting, washing, boxing, marketing, irrigation, weeding, and pest control.

Pastured Pork Operation Manager, Warren Wilson College Farm, Swannanoa, NC 2009-May 2010

• In charge of managing 22 sow herd, farrow to finish pastured operation. Tasks include; feeding, planting, tractor work, breeding, basic veterinary care and maintenance, building and infrastructure work.

• In charge of managing 6 person crew. Task include; weekly meetings, trainings and learning opportunities, organization of schedules, workload and details.

Farm Hand, Warren Wilson College Farm, Swannanoa, NC 2007-2009 (including FT Summer 2008)

• Integrated crop and livestock 200 acre farm. Livestock includes pastured pork, broilers and layers and grass-fed beef. Crops include hay, cereals, feed corn, sweet corn, and forage crops. Tasks include; animal care, general maintenance (fence and barn repair, carpentry, tractor and grainery maintenance), tractor work (mowing, planting, cultivating, hauling, bucket), hay making, straw bale throwing, planting, cultivating, manual labor.

Intern/Farm Hand, Grow Bio-intensive Agriculture Center of Kenya, Thika, Kenya Summer 2009

• Small Community Based Organization in Central Kenya that promotes sustainable agriculture to meet food security and AIDS needs. Worked as farm had on small bio-intensive training farm. Tasks included: planting, transplanting, weeding, animal care (dairy goat, chicken), harvesting, and seed saving. Field work included: farmer and community trainings and follow-up. Education and food security program for widows and orphans of HIV/AIDS. Also involved in grant writing, documentation and website creation.

Recycling Technician (“Trash Lady”), Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC 2007

• Worked as an integral part of a community and campus recycling program. Tasks included: garbage pick-up, sorting recyclables, trash, and used materials, creating art and journals from recycled goods, running a second-hand clothing store, large scale composting system, and disposal of chemical wastes.
