Steel Industry Experience

Early engineering career with Armco Steel Corporation across several QA/QC/Production Engineering assignments in Melting/Rolling/H R Rod/Wire Mills, Product Dev/ Tech Support responsibilities, and Technical Marketing to the OEM.

Managed a $12M sales territory in Kansas working with all Armco eastern mill products; namely, Cold Rolled, Hot Rolled, galvanized CR, and plate/structural shapes as well as Western Mills’ products.

Product/Marketing Manager position with Bekaert Steel Wire’s US operation with full pricing responsibility for their $40M Arkansas Operation and traveled between US/Belgium plants consulting on new products and product line acquisitions while managing marketing activities of this $40M division.

Most recently, oversaw several technical areas in the successful commissioning of the ME’s newest, state-of-the-art, HFI welded API 5L/5CT mill to supply pipe to the Gulf’s main markets and beyond. Guided the selection of electronic process control equipment to monitor optimal performance of critical processes on the mill; namely, forming, welding, and heat treatment as dictated by API, ISO, Shell, Saudi Aramco, and other end-user customers.

Coordinated hardware designs and software capabilities with equipment manufacturers in UK, Norway, Germany, France and US to allow us to capture, catalog, and report critical operating conditions; namely, line speed, temperatures, current, voltage, etc as these reports were written into customer delivery conditions.

Took our products and engineering services to the market with personal contacts with key engineering, procurement and operations management personnel at all active national and multi-national Oil & Gas, Engineering, and EPC contractors in the ME, W. Europe, India, and, to a lesser extent, S. E. Asia.

A hands-on metallurgical engineer who enjoyed spending time in the shop and with the customer in the role of problem solver and business developer. A professional engineer as comfortable in the plant as in making presentations in the Boardroom.

CAREER BACKGROUND

General Manager BDC, Ltd. Austin, Texas mid-2004-Present

Marketing products to/through a group of independent sales agencies in the ME and providing Bus Dev Mgmt support to a Singapore based manufacturer of cathodic protection, fasteners, and other products for the domestic/intl oil and gas, engineering, and epc contractor communities. In both instances, I’ve developed B2B marketing programs designed to expand their channels of distribution, empower staff sales personnel to build referral networks, and establish long term partnership marketing relationships within each market via www.busdevconsult.com.

Bus Dev Manager Rabiah & Nassar Group/SSP, Co. Dammam, KSA 1999–mid2004

Developed company’s first global plan to identify international target markets. Developed personal contact with key technical, marketing, and procurement managers at major oil & gas companies throughout the GCC and other ME Countries, interviewed/selected an in-country Agent in 12 ME markets to act on our behalf and wrote/spoke extensively about our new mill and its unique technologies. Subsequent to securing needed API, ISO, Shell, Aramco, KOC, Adnoc, PDO approvals, I negotiated/secured multi-million dollar contracts with contractors in primary/secondary target markets.

W. Reg. Sales & Marketing Manager Teelok Corporation Austin, Texas 1995-1999

Created marketing plan targeting Western US markets in engineering, architectural, residential and commercial construction industries in support of company’s wide range of engineering design software and steel component products and substantially improved industry recognition while increasing accounts from 3 to 20 strategically located companies from Texas to Arizona.

Manager -Sales & Marketing Truswal Systems Corporation Arlington, Texas 1992-1995

Built a market-driven sales team and established sales plans focused on the development of new accounts and growth in revenue with existing customer base resulting in 30% gain from a previously declining market-share for this engineering services and products manufacturer serving the US construction market.

Manager - Sales, Marketing & Bus Dev Overhead Door Corp Dallas, Texas 1989-1992

Managed a $225 million sales forecast with a $3 million operating budget for this the oldest manufacturer of industrial/residential doors and operators in the USA. In this role, I managed a staff of 60 professional sales/product managers, developed marketing programs and new products for 400 independent distributors and grew the business 8% over 3 years despite US construction activity being at a historic low point.

Guided domestic and international marketing efforts for a $97M manufacturer of fluids power hose and fitting for the Oil and Gas, Construction, Automotive, and Aerospace industries.

Product & Marketing Manager Bekaert Corporation Irving, Texas 1983-1986

Managed the product mix and pricing strategies for a $40 million division of this $2 billion Belgian steel wire company and guided strategic planning processes relative to application, risk analysis and corporate rationalization of capital expenditures while supporting 12 sales engineers with competitive analyses, market segment analyses and product mix evaluations. Oversaw a $280K marketing budget.

Product Engineer and Technical Rep Armco, Inc. Kansas City, Missouri 1975-1983

Responsible for product development across several product lines and evaluated manufacturing practices of address in-house and customer applications, active with ASTM on a national level in the design, development, and re-definition of a wide range of product specifications, and traveled extensively in the US and Canada to evaluate quality claims and customer process/application issues.
