Skills acquired:

• Research on case study of failed compliance in biotechnology, my case study was on bovine somatotrophin hormone being administered to cows which helps to improve the nutrient content of milk and yield larger quantities of milk.

• The result was there were side effects such as mastitis in cows which is a disease which affects the udder of cows.

Intellectual Property in Biotechnology:

Skills acquired:

• Studied the methods of patenting genes in plasmids.

• Identified software which aides in patenting genes on plasmids using the Derwent Innovation Index.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Masters Project:

Double encapsulation of fish oil using Spray Aerosol system to produce microgels, with alginate as coating agent followed by double coating with chitosan.

Skills acquired:

• Preparing emulsions of fish oil with lecithin, encapsulation, and pasteurisation tests to check for stability of fish oil.

• My sample was video graphed and considered for a journal

Masters Project:

Measuring Total Phenolic Content [TPC], and free radical scavenging activity in different varieties of apples [Red delicious, royal gala and granny smith.]

Skills acquired:

• Extraction of phenolics using extraction methods like homogenisation and liquid nitrogen. Spectrophotometric analysis to measure the absorbance. Microsoft excel to calculate the total phenolics and antioxidant activity.

Skills acquired:

• Microbiological testing of contamination using haemocytometer, ELISA [Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay] and Luminometer.
