I am a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Technology from SIU (Southern Illinois University). I have worked in the Safety and Health field for more than 15 years. I have applied health and safety laws, principles and regulations in Life and Fire Safety, particularly in my position as a Safety Officer at Jackson Hospital, and in my former position as a Safety Specialist at the V.A. Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. I represented these hospitals in new construction meetings with reputable construction Companies. My experience in industrial, healthcare, and institutional settings includes the regulation of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, DOT and Life Safety Code (101), Joint Commission requirements. Specifically, I have conducted safety inspections to verify compliance with established Safety and Occupational Health standards and policies according to OSHA (29 CFR 1910) and the Construction Safety Standard (29CFR 1926). As a Risk Management Representative, I made OSHA type inspections of several manufacturing plants and reviewed their safety programs. I made recommendations for improvement. As a Safety Director for a large distribution center, I made rounds, trained supervisory staff in accident reporting, investigation, and self-inspections. I have been a Defensive Driving Instructor for over-the-road drivers. I am familiar with Fleet Safety Program development and implementation. I have made inspections at construction sites. I have worked as a Shift Engineer for a Sugar Cane Manufacturing Plant. As VP of Business Operations, I have planned, directed, and controlled several businesses. The businesses consisted of Restaurants, Gas Stations and Grocery Stores. Food safety, maintaining health standards and sanitation were of prime importance. I am well familiar with VPP for industry. Also I have an Associate Degree in Petroleum Distribution Technology from USAF Community college.
In addition to this, I have advised upper management in health and safety matters including Emergency Preparedness. I have conducted environmental rounds and safety inspections of both clinical and non-clinical areas. I have expertise in Life Safety and Environment of Care issues. I have a strong background in Injury Prevention and Workers’ Compensation. I have conducted Hazard Analysis and assessed PPE requirements for different departments. I have conducted Emergency Drills. I attended Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meetings. I helped set up Hospital Command Center (HCC).
I have coordinated a Hazardous Waste Committee and a Safety Committee. I have been a Defensive Driving Instructor for over-the-road drivers. I am familiar with Fleet Safety Program development and implementation. I have maintained and updated records of seven chapters of Environment of Care (EOC) in order to meet or exceed Joint Commission requirements. I have co-chaired EOC Committee meetings. This included setting and achieving goals. With the help of committee members, I prepared an annual report to be presented to the Hospital Board. I was a regular member of the Infection Control, Quality Control, and Radiation Safety Committees. I have a well rounded and professional background in the field of Safety.
