Project Assistant 2001

A project was completed in Gram-negative bacteria associated with White

Spot Syndrome in Penaeus indicus. White Spot Syndrome is one of the most

dreaded diseases in Shrimp Aquaculture. The organism responsible for this

disease has caused mass mortalities of shrimp in India, Thailand, China,

and Japan. This virus (WSSV) is a rod shaped enveloped, nonocculated

virion. Due to the infection of this virus there is a rapid reduction in

food consumption, lethargy, a loose cuticle and a pink to reddish brown

discoloration of the hepatopancrease. The course of infection by WSSV leads

to a profound impact of opportunistic pathogens, particularly an invasion

by Vibrio, Alteromonas, Aeromonas, Photo bacterium, Enterobacterialceae,

and Pseudomonas. This indicates that viral infection weakens host defense

mechanism considerably enabling the entry of secondary pathogens.
