Nova Chemical project

This project was about modelling, simulation and optimization of a superstructure process where a distillation column was combined in parallel with an axillary separator such as pressure swing adsorption (PSA) , facilitated transport membrane unit. As a result, Nova Chemical Corporation (NCC) has recently under taken a project for the energy efficient debottlenecking of its Joffre Ethylene C2 and Corunna C3 splitters in preparation for pilot scale demonstration.

• Designed shortcut method for superstructure systems such as distillation/adsorption, distillation/membrane.

• Conducted initial analysis for choosing the proper membranes for separation olefin and paraffin, developed results into rigorous mathematical model and designed program codes to simulate the performance of the membrane separation.

• Designed program codes in Mathematica to calculate thermodynamic properties of olefin and paraffin mixtures.

• Developed dynamic simulation of four-step pressure swing adsorption. This dynamic simulation was described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) in which mass, energy, and momentum balances and adsorption equilibrium were applied.

• Studied and investigated various adsorbents and determined their adsorption equilibrium isotherm for olefin and paraffin.

• Performed exergy analysis on the pressure swing adsorption processes to determine irreversibility sources of the process.

• Conducted and attend technical meetings with NCC and prepared the progress report of the project.

IOGEN Project

IOGEN project was a collaborative IOGEN/University of Ottawa NSERC funded work to reduce the production costs of cellulosic ethanol from biomass.

• Developed program codes to calculate thermodynamics properties of binary mixture of water and ethanol.

• Designed a rigorous model to simulate pervaporation membrane by applying mass and energy balance coupled with mass transfer model.

• Performed optimal design of hybrid (distillation / pervaporation membrane) ethanol dehydration systems.

• Studied thermodynamic equipartition and energy efficient membrane network for ethanol purification processes.

Multicomponent Distillation Project

• Applied variety of thermodynamic models and designed program codes to predict vapour liquid equilibrium and develop residue curve maps for the following nonideal multicomponent mixtures:

• Ternary mixtures of chloroform, acetone, and benzene. Liquid phase was modelled by applying

UNIQUAC equation.

• Azeotropic mixture of acetone, methanol and water. Liquid phase was modelled by Wilson equation.

• Quaternary of azeotropic mixture of acetic acid, ethanol, ethyl acetate and water. Liquid and vapour phases were modeled using UNIQUAC equation and Hayden-O’Connell model respectively.

CO2 Capture

• Design program code in Mathematica for vapour liquid equilibrium of carbon dioxide in aqueous mixture of Monoethanolamine.

• Conducted research on modelling of carbon dioxide capture with aqueous Monoethanolamine.

Research Assistant

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, Canada 2004-July 2007

• Modeled and simulated the circulating fast fluidized-bed reformer for steam reforming of natural gas.

• Developed PFD and P&ID, performed process equipment design, mass and heat balance, and economic evaluation for Hexamethylenetetramine plant.

• Developed a novel technique to produce defect free PPO based nanocomposite membranes.

• Conducted membrane characterization using X-RD, TGA, DSC, SEM, EDX.
