Motivation:
From my initial dream of being an Architect, working over 10 years in the areas of Industrial, Commercial, and Residential has created a passion for the
Construction Management field. My desire is to continue this long journey and expand my knowledge with the purpose of having a successful and satisfying career.
Employment:
Hi Tech Tile & Marble – Canoga Park, California (April’08 – May’08)
Chief Estimator – I created estimates for commercial floor and wall finish projects that used stone surfaces such as marble and granite. Working from supplied blueprints I performed the takeoff estimate building a bill of materials for quotation. I managed the supplier quotation process to gather materials pricing for the projects. I determined which company to use based on price, product, and prior experience with each respected company.
A.H. Cornell & Son, Inc., Jamison, Pennsylvania (July’07 – Jan.’08)
Estimator – I was recruited by A.H. Cornell & Son from Reeves Engineering. They are an excavation company specializing in paving, with an over 50-year history. I created preconstruction project estimation for commercial and residential projects. Working from paper plans and directly from AutoCAD files I would estimate surveying, demolition, erosion and sediment control, civil, water, storm and sanitary sewer, landscaping, lighting and paving specialties, both on-site and off-site. I was part of the earthwork estimation team and used Carlson Takeoff for the dirt-work calculations. I also gathered quotes from outside vendors and sub contractors for our proposals. It was my duty to make sure the vendors and subcontractors gave us a fair price to help us bid competitively and win jobs.
Reeves Engineering, Bellmawr, New Jersey (Oct.’06 – June.’07)
CAD Technician – Reeves Engineering was a new civil engineering firm when I first came aboard. Working as a member of a design team I created design concept plans for both residential and commercial sites using AutoCAD 2008. My work included designing parking lots, emphasizing conflict prevention with setback lines, determining limit of disturbance of wetlands and other natural elements. I obtained aerial photographs (using Google Earth) and merged them with the concept plans to show how the plan changed the current conditions. I also verified and updated the aerial information for each site with field survey to determine what surrounding area looked like within a 5 to 10-mile radius. I would work between 50-70 hours a week (sometimes weekends) to make sure the jobs done right, and received by the client the day they expected. The dedication we would put into our work has given Reeves Engineering an excellent reputation among building companies, resulting in much more business, and a reputation of being one of the better up-and coming civil engineering firms throughout South Jersey and Philadelphia.
Heritage Building Group, Jamison, Pennsylvania (Feb.’05 – Sept.’06)
Project Manager / Estimator – Heritage Building Group is a building company who owns many residential and commercial sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. I received blue prints and CAD files, and created sketch, preliminary, and final estimates for each residential and commercial site. I created preconstruction project estimation, which would include: surveying, demolition, erosion and sediment control, civil, water, storm and sanitary sewer, landscaping, lighting, and paving specialties, both on-site and off-site. I was part of the earthwork estimation team and used Carlson Takeoff for the dirt-work calculations. The sites I dealt with would be anywhere from 3 to 300 lots, and cost between $100,000-$20,000,000. As the project manager / estimator for the projects, I gathered quotes from several surveying and site contractors, and matched the bids with my bid. This would help me determine what the contractors may have missed in their bid, what I may have missed, how far off each of them are, and what they can do to win the job.
Pep Boys Corporate Headquarters, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (April’97 – Sept.’05)
Industrial Engineering Assistant / Analyst & CAD Technician – I was the CAD Technician and Engineering Analyst for the Industrial Engineering group of a $2.5 billion dollar retail automotive service and parts company. The I.E. group supported the Distribution and Logistics Supply Chain departments. In my eight-year tenure at Pep Boys the responsibility and authority content of my position increased as the department grew in size and scope. As my duties increased I learned new tools and skills, boarding my knowledge of what the team did. In the time the department grew from one manager to four, and I supported each of the four Engineering Managers / Project Managers with separate responsibilities and duties:
· Industrial Engineering Director
As part of the design and construction team for two major distribution center
projects in Chester, NY (400,000 s.f. - $17 million) and San Bernardino, CA
(600,000 s.f. - $26 million) I created floor plans, elevations, details, 3D
drawings, and as-built drawings using AutoCAD 13 – 2002. I performed
equipment takeoffs of various storage systems (carton flow, bin shelving, tire
racks, etc.), guardrails, pallets, and other material handling and storage
equipment. I assisted in the production of complex RFP packages that were
sent to many companies bidding on the equipment and helped the project manager
review and evaluate the bids.
I traveled to each existing distribution center, performed complete building
and equipment surveys and created as-built floor plans, elevation, and details
of the existing operations. As new equipment was considered, I assisted in
the development of RFP packages and helped the project manager review and
evaluate the bids. As equipment was installed I updated the as-built drawings
to match the new systems.
I designed future parts warehouses, creating various floor plans and
determining which equipment layout would work better based on process flow and
maximizing the potential storage.
· Distribution Systems Project Manager
The Distribution Center Warehouse Management System (WMS) used the actual
Cartesian Coordinates for every location in the warehouse to optimize product
movement in the operations. From our As-Built CAD files I created data files
of the xyz coordinates for every location in every distribution center. As
equipment was moved, or new equipment installed, I would update the
coordinates in the systems. As management would adjust the pick path of
products in the warehouses I would assist in the maintenance of the pick path
coordinates and pick sequence files.
· Corporate Engineering Project Manager
I created and maintained a weekly capacity report for each distribution center
that communicated merchandise capacity in each DC and the current utilization.
The report included data on the current dollar value, units, cubic feet and
equivalent pallets of the inventory, and changes from the previous week.
In support of the “Peghook Back” stocking plan for the stores I helped
identify and create “family groups” for the merchandise in the distribution
centers. The program helped store employees stock shelves easier and quicker.
We set up the distribution centers’ merchandise based the setup of the stores.
The items would be stocked on the shelves in each DC by Family Group and then
picked by Family Group for shipping to the stores, thus making sure the
merchandise would go into the right aisles.
· Field Engineering Manager
I assisted the field engineer with time studies. We would go to a store
before and after the “family groups” idea has been implemented and time how
long it would take them to bring merchandise in from the delivery trucks to
the stock shelves. These studies helped us determine how much quicker and
easier the new stocking system was and identified changes that needed to be
made for improvements.
During my time in the Distribution department, I would help the Store
Development Department survey existing stores to make sure the floor plans
were accurate. I would also help design new and remodeled existing stores, as
well as clean up old drawings. This would benefit the Store Development CAD
Manager by letting him deal with other more important tasks at hand.
