PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Biomedical Mechanics Group, Cornell University, 2010-Present
RESEARCH ENGINEER
Research with emphasis on characterizing microarchitecture and metabolic activity of bone, determining the causes of fatigue and fragility failures in bone, and evaluating treatment and prevention methods for osteoporosis.
- Conducted stress and strain analysis of bone using finite element analysis. Optimized finite element meshes of bone by combining boundary regions into simplified substructures using CAD, ABAQUS, MATLAB, and Python.
- Developed 3D designs of surgical fixtures and mechanical test fixtures using GD&T and Solidworks. Manufactured fixtures using composite materials and machining processes.
- Developed sub-micron resolution 3D image processing methods for simulation and modeling of cellular repair of bone using statistical analysis, MATLAB, Amira, and Tcl scripts. Works published in JBMR and Bone.
- Designed novel sub-micron resolution 3D imaging system for imaging fluorescent labels of cellular activity and microscopic tissue damage within bone. The system is capable of imaging at a resolution of up to 350 nm, and has no limitation on physical specimen size.
- Managed CNC operation, troubleshot 3D imaging system hardware and software, and developed custom Labview code to automate acquisition of over 3 million high-resolution images.
- Analyzed strain response of bacteria using custom-designed nano fluidic channels, and discovered the relationship between image resolution and strain measurement accuracy.
Musculoskeletal Mechanics & Materials Lab, Case Western Reserve University, 2005-2010
RESEARCHER
Research focused on identifying and quantifying bone loss resulting from microstructural remodeling and repair of cancellous bone, developing methods for fracture risk prediction, and prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
- Developed image processing algorithms for automated identification of bone damage using statistical methods, MATLAB, C/C++, FORTRAN, and Amira. Works published in Journal of Microscopy.
- Discovered the effect of image resolution on 3D measures of resorption cavities in trabecular bone. Findings published in Bone.
- Developed and implemented novel approach to test FDA approved drug therapies for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis via clinical trials.
- Conducted minimally invasive animal surgery and in-vivo mechanical testing of bone, and analyzed microfracture and fatigue failure of bone. Designed material test fixtures using Solidworks.
- Analyzed mechanotransduction of bacteria. Designed microscope fixtures fixtures using GD&T and Solidworks.
Custom Project, Cleveland, OH, 2009-2010
STRUCTURAL AND TURBOCHARGER ENGINEER
Designed and manufactured custom turbocharged motor, fluid systems, and suspension components.
- Created 3D models of custom parts using Solidworks and AutoCad.
- Optimized design of components and systems using ANSYS, ANSYS FLUENT, and Excel.
Academic Project, Case Western Reserve University, 2009
DESIGN ENGINEER
Developed approach for material testing of novel biocompatible, biodegradable porous material polypropylene fumarate (PPF) used in implants for craniofacial reconstructive surgery.
- Fabricated PPF scaffold structures for material testing using rapid prototyping methods.
- Conducted material testing to obtain Young’s modulus of PPF material.
- Collaborated with surgeons, professors, and engineers in the development process.
FIRST Robotics, Columbus, OH, 2003-2005
AUTONOMOUS ROBOTICS ENGINEER
Collaborated with a team of students and professional engineers to develop autonomous robots.
