Work Experience
Research Aide Jan 2010 - Present
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine,
Department of Biomedical Sciences.
El Paso, TX
I worked in the center of excellence of infectious diseases in the department of biomedical sciences. The laboratory performed research into influenza viruses. Duties included: virus propagation, assays for flu virus, protein isolation and purification, and mammalian cell culture. I am currently working in the department of histopathology, core laboratory. The shift occurred when the PI of the previous lab resigned. Duties in the histopathology core include: sample preparation for a scanning electron microscope, some crystallography work with an x-ray diffractometer, and assisting in the launch of a rodent necropsy service.
Research Assistant Apr 2007 - Jun 2009
Weill Cornell Medical College, Department of Medicine, Division of Diabetes and Transplantation,
New York, NY
I worked in a transplantation research laboratory isolating rodent pancreatic islet cells for transplantation (rodents) and survival surgery of rodents with isolated pancreatic islets (diabetic mice). The research also isolated T-cells (T-reg) in rodents for manipulation in transplant models.
Research Assistant July 1998 - May 2006
New York Blood Center, Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute, Department of Virology
New York, NY
I maintained an immunodeficient mouse colony (NOD/scid and SCID mice). I performed survival surgery and xenotransplantation in these mice with human tissue. I inoculated hepatitis virus ( B & C) into immunodeficient rodents. I isolated liver cells (mammalian) for primary cell culture and transplantation
Research Assistant (animal) June 1991 - May 1998
Aaron diamond AIDS Research Center, Rockefeller University,
New York, NY
I maintained an immunodeficient mouse colony (SCID); breeding, husbandry, producing chimeric mice for HIV infection, survival rodent surgery, and xenotransplantation. I assisted in the isolation of HIV and its sequencing the laboratory.
Research Technician August 1989 – May 1991
Mount Sinai Medical Center, Department of Microbiology
New York, NY
Research technician in an influenza research lab. I performed mammalian cell culture, isolated influenza virus, inoculated small rodents with influenza virus. I performed various assays; ELISA, RIA, neuraminidase, hemagglutinin, and protein isolation.
Education
New England Bio Labs Inc.-Smith College, Springfield, MA
Molecular biology course.
Comprehensive course sponsored and arranged by New England Bio labs Inc. covering nucleic acid isolation and analysis, sequencing, northern and southern blotting, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and gene cloning.
Spring 1999
La Guardia Community College, NY
Certification in laboratory Animal Sciences (LAT)
Laboratory animal technician is certified by the American Association of laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS). This is a national entity that certifies animal research and husbandry within the United States. Member of AALAS since 1992.
Jan 1992 - Apr 1992
Southern Methodist University
Dallas, TX
B.S. Biology
Minor in chemistry
Aug 1981 - May 1985
University of east London
Stratford, London, UK
Coursework in biophysical science, I completed 1st year of the course, and took an opportunity to study abroad (United States).
Oct 1980 - May 1981
