More Detailed Descriptions
Peer Tutoring at Medical School:
During my entire medical school career, I had a work-study job that allowed me to tutor my peers and the medical students in the preceding classes. First, I started tutoring biochemistry and physiology. By my second year, I had tutored everything else accept anatomy. I profoundly enjoyed both one-on-one and small group tutoring. Not only did I help others to learn the relevant material, but often I learned even more myself! In fact, this job motivated me not just to learn the material for the test, but to master it in order to teach others. Furthermore, if I was not able to explain a concept, then I probably did not understand it well myself. Consequently, I became very cognizant to the missing gaps in my knowledge and I tried to fill them immediately to teach others lucidly. In the end, everyone benefited. When I moved to Phoenix for my third and fourth year clerkships, I continued tutoring medical students from the new ATSU Medical School in Mesa that opened in August of 2007.
Journal Club President at Medical School:
The Journal Club is a vibrant ATSU organization with the emphasis on interactive discussion of the latest evidence based medicine from various peer reviewed journals. We met approximately twice per month to discuss clinically relevant papers, which were presented by our members, ATSU faculty and guest speakers. Furthermore, we sponsored service activities both on and off campus such as the Hunger Banquet, the Literature Night for the senior citizens, the evidence based medicine software analyses at our library, and the Stress Ball Night during the finals week. I profoundly enjoyed being a president of this wonderful student organization. I found this leadership experience to be very rewarding and extremely meaningful.
Undergraduate Research Experience (Mulcahy Scholar Biochemistry Lab)
At Loyola University of Chicago, I conducted two years of independent biochemistry research as a Mulcahy Scholar under the auspices of Dr. Leslie Fung. My research was focused on defining structural and functional properties involved in association of alpha and ß spectrin subunits in human erythrocytes. This was necessary to attain a better understanding of diseases associated with spectrin mutations (such as sickle cell anemia and elliptocytosis) because spectrin is a protein that organizes integral proteins in the plasma membrane and anchors other proteins to the cytoskeleton; thus, enabling formation of a biconcave skeletal structure in erythrocytes. My specific task was to test a preexisting model explaining the interaction of alpha and ß spectrin subunits. After spending countless hours in the lab during these two years, I have learned many lab techniques and this research offered me an excellent opportunity to apply what I have learned in the classroom.
Medical School Research Experience:
I worked in the microbiology and immunology lab for Dr. Sargentini. I helped him conduct research aimed at understanding the molecular basis of DNA repair in the E. coli bacteria as a model for understanding the basis of cancer development in humans. Specifically we studied the structure and function of radA protein and the radA gene while trying to determine its role in the DNA repair. We also studied how gamma radiation, DNA damage, DNA repair processes, and translation of DNA replication interact to produce the observed mutations.
Arizona Medical Association Board of Trustees Student Member:
The Arizona Medical Association helps doctors and patients by uniting physicians in Arizona to take action on the most important professional and public health issues. This position is open to a few peer elected medical students to represent their respective medical schools. As student Board of Trustee Member, I oversaw various financial and membership duties.
