Upgrades to the existing refinery at their Milnerton complex.

FISCHER TROPSCH DEMONSTRATION REACTOR.(FTDR) Sasolburg.

A demonstration plant being used for testing new reactor internals and catalyst associated with heat input requirement, reaction variables and yield, the feedstock reforms gas comprising of hy-drogen and carbon-monoxide.

A cost estimate for the expansion of the plant; i.e. Additional Warehouses, Tanks, Pumps, Heaters, Piping and Structural Platforms, relocation of existing equipment and structural platforms. Re-sponsibilities included site verification, routing of Piping and sketching Structural requirements.

FUEL COMPONENT TRANSFER PROJECT. Natref.(Sasolburg)

Upgrading of an existing pump station. Responsibilities included design of a new pipe-rack across road ‘J’(south) and rail-line (7650m x 36000m), routing of pipe-lines from tie-in points.

Due to the possibility that Project Turbo might be delayed, the refinery formulated a contingency strategy to meet the requirements for unleaded fuel. Some of the Projects that were targeted which I have been involved in is the routing of coal tar naphtha(CTN) to U33; recovery of naphta from the BTX stream currently sent to U13/213;routing Benzene Rich Streams to U32 (Cat Poly West); the addition Gas Liquor Coolers standby Heat Exchangers U213; New Air Cooled Exchangers for east and west refinery Plat-formers. Responsibilities included generating dwg’s for basic engineering, tagging of tie-In points, line- lists, tie-in lists, man-hour estimates flow-sheet mark-up’s.

Sasol Polymers Polythene operates a Polyethylene production complex. The main components are an ICI autoclave Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Plant(Poly 1) and a Unipol, Gas Linear Low Den-sity Polyethylene(LLDPE) Plant(Poly 2). Due to additional ethylene being available from Secunda the decision to increase the capacity of the LLDPE (Poly2) Plant, to construct a new Exxon Mobil Tubu-lar(LDPE) Plant(Poly 3), and to upgrade unit S4600 Ethylene Processing Plant at SCI, Sasol 1 Plant so that the delivery rate to the Polyethylene Production Complex.

Responsibilities included Site Support, Process Tagging of Tie-In points to engineering line dia-grams and piping isometrics, Liasoning with the Client to approve tie-in’s, Corrective Engineering during the Shut-down phase.

FLUOR ARABIA, LIMITED. Jubail –Saudi Arabia.

UNITED OLEFINS COMPLEX PROJECT. 2003-2004.

A green field project, consisting of a Utility Plant, Ethylene Plant, Ethylene Oxide & Ethylene Glycol Plant, Cooling Tower, Sea Water Intake & Outfall Basins Horizontal Flare System and Tankage Facil-ities. Responsibilities included Re-Instatement of pipelines(post hydro-test) in the Utility Plant, Cor-rective Engineering due to design and construction errors, Engineering punching of the large bore piping in the sea and cooling water systems, comprising of plate exchangers, filters, vertical and horizontal pumps, turbines, sea water intake and outfall basins cooling tower and cooling water tank.

PRECIOUS METAL REFINERY. 2002-2003

Upgrading of the existing base metal refinery. Responsible for Checking of Pipe Rack, Site Verifica-tion, Checking of Tie-In’s, Bulk Material Take-Offs, Stress related Pipe Supports, Overland Steam & Condensate G.A.`s. Mechanical and Piping G.A.’s(plans and elevations) of new Units in the refinery using Solid Edge’s g.a. package.

SKORPION ZINC PROJECT. Anglo Base-Matels Namibia (Pty) Ltd.

Designed to produce 150 000 tons of super high-grade zinc per year. Located in the desert

In Southern Namibia. Responsibilities included Checking of Pipe-Rack G.A.`s & Material Take-Off’s.

MAANDAGSHOEK PROJECT.

Ore extracted from two sources will be transported to a centralized concentrator, which will treat the material at a rate of 200 ktpm. The concentrator will be specifically designed to treat UG2 ore. Responsible for structural supporting of piping on Floatation and Milling Area’s. Locating pipe sup-ports by driving through the 3D model (Solid Edge); then creating 2D Pipe support G.A.’s utilizing Auto Cad 14.

SAMANCOR TUBATSE FERROCHROME 2001.

Samancor Chrome is expanding its production capacity (to 520,000 tpa of sintered pellets) through the development of apelletising and sintering plant, for the production of sintered chromite pellets. The main process stages are wet grinding, filtering, pelletising and sintering. Responsibilities in-cluded General Arrangements & Sections of Sintering Furnace Zone, Gas Cleaning and Heating Scrubber and Pipe Racks.

ATOMIC ENERGY CORPARATION of S.A. Ltd. Pelindaba.

NECSA – PELINDABA TECHNOLOGY CHEMICALS. 2000-2001.

Part of the Task Force based at Pelindaba dealing with current Projects.

Project Sirius.

Designing & Checking of Nitrogen Storage Area; Designing of the NF3 Crude Capture(Nitrogen Trif-luoride) that is used primarily as a chamber-cleaning agent with a secondary use as an etchant in the production of semiconductor wafers which are use in the assembly of electronic equipment such as computers, cell-phones etc. Responsibilities included Piping General Arrangement, Piping Sections Isometrics & Data Sheets.

(SULZER CHEMTECH.)(PTY)LTD. Schumann Sasol S.A. 1999.

Currently Schuman Sasol S.A.(Pty) LTD uses Seven Distillation Units to fractionate their Wax prod-ucts ,which poses numerous disadvantages. Some of these are high operating costs; poor yields of high value material, no flexibility in product slate and finally poor distillation cuts leading to inferior product. Therefore, the concept of the SDU was born. Responsibilities included Liaison with the Clients Process/Project engineers; Site surveys & verification to establish constant design & routing; General Arrangements & Support Drawings ; Isometrics with Bills of Materials.

BATEMAN MINERALS & Kasese Cobalt Company Ltd.

INDUSTRIAL LIMITED. Uganda Africa. 1997 - 1998.

Pyrite concentrate will be reclaimed from the old tailings dam by high pressure monitor guns and will be pumped to the process plant. Reclaimed slurry will be thickened. Limestone will be quarried and crushed in a jaw crusher prior to transportation. The quantity of solution passing to the solvent extraction to cobalt recovery will be a critical parameter, and will be related to the amounts of fresh water entering the entire circuit. High recoveries of soluble cobalt, using minimal quantities of wash, will be achieved using a three stage counter-current wash, with fresh water addition on the last stage only. Responsibilities include liaison with the varies disciplines; Checking of Layout; General Arrangements; Isometrics. Design and Re-designing of certain given areas using Auto-cad.

FLUOR DANIEL SOUTH AFRICA. Sasol 3.Secunda.

Chemical Work-Up Facility. 1997.

Upgrading of the existing facilities on the Aspen Plant. Responsible for the installation of a new Re-boiler, and all the relative piping modification to the Column, Condensate Drum and Pumps. i.e. Pip-ing Plans, Isometrics, Tie-in Isometrics and Site Verifications.

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) Zirconium Basic Sulphate (ZBS) Plant.

An extension to the existing plant with additional units to produce ZBS, an intermediate product used in the manufacture of zirconium salts for the automotive and industrial catalyst, electronics (mobile phones), paint drying, anti-per spirant and paper industries. Responsible for the Checking of Piping Plans and Material Take-Offs. i.e. Preliminary and Secondary.

Acetic Acid Recovery. 1996 -1997.

Field Engineering. Responsible for Corrective Engineering and Re-designing of Design Office & Field errors.

LINDE - AECI JOINT VENTURE. Sasol 2.Secunda.

Acetic Acid Recovery. 1996.

Acid Recovery Unit consist of Process; Extraction and Offsite Facilities. Responsibilities

included the Checking of Isometrics utilizing PDS Design Review Model.

LUMMUS - EMS JOINT VENTURE Sasol 2.Secunda.

Hydro-Isomerization. 1996.

Hydro-isomerization Unit consists of Processing facilities to Hydrogenate C5 and C6 diolefins to mono-olefins and to Hydroisomerize the alpa olefins in the mixed C5/C6 feed stock for octane en-hancement. Responsibilities included checking of piping plans; vessel clip sheets; isometrics & mps's for the Depentanizer column, reboiler, reflux drum, condenser, bottoms pumps, reflux pump, L. P. condensate drum, condensate cooler and return pumps.

TAME( TERTIARY AMY METHYL ETHER.) Sasol 2.Secunda.

Tame consists of Processing and support facilities to produce Tame from Iso-amylene and metha-nol. Responsible for design of piping layouts including general arrangements; squad checking; checking including the CD reactor column, re-boiler, Tame product pumps, pipe-racks and vessel clip sheets.

FOSTER WHEELER BABCOCK (PTY) LTD. Caltex Refinery; Cape Town.

PLANT 4-PLATFORMER. 1995.

The upgrading of the existing Platformer unit, with the addition of a new compressor and the re-placement of the fin fan bank. Responsibilities included piping plans of the fin fan bank & pipe-racks, sectional views of the compressor, location for control stations, Field Assignment for verifi-cation.

ENGEN REFINERY.( EX- MOBILE). Durban.

WAX FORMULATION PLANT.

Additions and upgrading of the existing plant. Responsibilities included checking of piping plans and isometrics.

AECI'S POLIFIN- PVC PLANT. Sasolburg.

MIDLANDS RESTRUCTURING PROJECT.

The upgrading and expansion of existing PVC facilities. Responsibilities included piping plans of the compressor area; checking of general arrangements and isometrics.

TUBULAR REVERSE OSMOSIS (TRO)- DESILINATION PLANT. 1994-1995.

The requirement of the TRO design is to change the current positive water balance to a negative

water balance by the recovery of quality permeate water from clear ash effluent and disposal of brine and permeate produced. Responsibilities included layouts of unit 66 interfacing with unit 67, i.e. nozzle orientations of tanks; Layouts of Pipe-racks; Checking of piping plans, isometrics with bills of materials.

SAS REACTOR PROJECT. Sasol 3.Secunda.

SOLC (SASOL ON LINE CATALYST. Synthol Unit 20.

The upgrading of facilities to maintain an active catalyst in the Synthol reactors. Responsibilities included the checking of layouts; isometrics with bills of materials; site verifications.

ENGEN REFINERY-GENREF( EX- MOBILE). 1992-1994.

VISBREAKER -THERMAL CRACKER.

The existing Vis-breaker Unit being upgraded to bring the new Visbreaker Unit - Unit 19 on line and will be then be converted to a Thermal Cracker Unit - Unit 06. Being based on Site, my responsibili-ties included the checking of pipe-rack G.A.'s, isometrics and equipment pipe- up's within my given area.

ENGEN REFINERY - GENREF.

VISBREAKER. Unit 19.

This crude unit that separates crude petroleum into fractions such as naphtha, gasoline, kerosene, heating oils and heavier stock. Responsibilities included redesigning where necessary, checking of piping plans, isometrics and squad checking.

KARBO CHEMICALS. Newcastle, Natal.

The upgrading of existing facilities at the synthetic rubber producing plant. Responsibilities

included nozzle orientations, piping plans and stress sketches.

SASOL ONE RENOVATION PROJECT. Sasolburg.

FIELD ASSIGNMENT.

The upgrading of the existing slurry reactor bed and wax producing units. Responsibilities included the preparation of flow sheets and test packages for pressure testing of these units.

SASTECH- SASOLBURG. Sasol 1.-Unit 4600.

HIGH PURITY ALCOHOLS PROJECT. 1992.

The upgrading of the existing alcohols plant into a high purity plant. By means of extractive distilla-tion propylol and kerosol produces N. Propanol as overheads. Ethylol is pre-treated, overheads as a co-product and the bottoms distilled with kerosol is produced as ethanol. As the only Designer, my responsibilities included: plot plans, drawing transpositions, equipment and piping layouts, piping plans and sections, supports, nozzle orientations, isometrics and liaison between engineering and the field.

Design and modification of section of the existing refinery for increased production. Responsibili-ties included design of given areas, checking of piping plans and isometrics.

FCCU FRACTIONATOR/ FEED PREHEAT EXCHANGER TRAIN/ USGP. Unit 22.

The light and recovery unit where products are a range of naphtha and gas overheads, which is used as cutter stock in bunker fuel blending, Light Cycle Oil(LCO) and refinery fuel oil. Responsibili-ties included layouts of de-ethaniser/ absorber column, vessel, exchangers, pump & turbine banks, pipe-racks, piping transpositions, drawing indexes, checking and approving of the units tie-in’s.

FOSTER WHEELER Island View- Durban.

MOBILE STORAGE FACILITY. 1990.

Upgrading of the existing storage facility at the Crude Oil Terminal Island View. Responsible for nozzle orientations.

Matla. Consisting of cooling towers, compressor, air compressor, pumps, after coolers and filters. Responsibilities included pipe supports material summaries and shortage list and isometrics with bills of materials

FLUOR ENGINEERS S. A(PTY) LTD. Sasol 1. CRESYLIC ACID PROJECT. 1988 - 1990.

Cresylic Acid is a commercial mixture of Phenolic materials boiling above the cresol range, being one of three isometric phenols present in creoste and used as a disinfectant. Responsibilities in-cluded plot plans, checking and designing of the unit.

MOSSELBAY ONSHORE REFINERY. Unit 10.

SYNTHOL CATALYST PREPARATION PLANT.

Preparation of catalyst - millscale and haematite for the synthol process. Responsibilities included the plot plan, designing the unit & isometrics with bills of material.

SASOL POLYPROPYLENE PLANT. Secunda.

FIELD ASSIGNMENT.

New polypropylene plant erected to process raw catalyst into polypropylene pellets. Responsible for pressure testing for the entire plant, i.e. the preparation of flow sheets and test packages for the entire plant which consisted of catalyst preparation, extrusion and polymerization.

GENCOR TORBANITE PROJECT.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN.

A process of refining Torbanite - a high grade coal into petroleum products and by-products. Re-sponsibilities included overall plot plans; i.e. plot plans, clearance and terracing plans; utilities and lay-downs plan; process flow diagrams & overall block flow drawings.

ETHYLENE PLANT RECOMMISSIONING. Sasol 1.

C5 and METHANE MAKE-UP.

Final design work for modification to the existing ethylene plant to accommodate an Ethane/ Me-thane streams from Secunda for further work up to Ethylene. Responsibilities included the design-ing of piping systems with given areas; site verification; isometrics with bills of materials.

GROOTGELUK JOINT VENTURE. Grootgeluk Coal Mine.

AECI`S ACETYLENE PLANT. 1984-1987.

Chemical piping-up of six pumps to two Lime Slurry scrubbers for increasing the Acetylene’s Dust Output. Responsibilities included Designing of the given area i.e. plans; elevations; site routing and verification and isometrics with bills of material.

12 BAR FACTORY STEAM. Sasol 1.

Design and modification to the Medium Pressure Steam System throughout the factory. Responsi-bilities included system isometrics for stress analysis; site routing and verification.

SECTION 1400 SYNTHESIS X -RAY Sasol 1.

Designing and re-routing of corroded lines in the plant. Responsibilities included site routing and verification; isometrics with bills of material.

The addition of two new reactors, and upgrading of the BOC area. Responsibilities included bulk material take - off for carbon steel and stainless steel pipe; isometrics with bills of material;
