Experiences:
- 1975-2008: volunteer firefighter with the Asbury Fire Department, Asbury, Iowa. During this period of served as a firefighter, Firefighter I Instructor, EMS Coordinator, Training Officer, and as Fire Chief for two years. Also wrote a number of grants for the department.
- 1979-1982: employed by The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa as a Respiratory Therapy Technician.
- 1979-1983: employed by the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa as Director of Security.
- 1982-2003: employed by the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, Dubuque, Iowa. During this period of time served as a jail deputy; patrol deputy; patrol supervisor with a rank of sergeant; training officer; tactical team leader; jail supervisor with a rank of sergeant; and Captain overseeing jail and special operations. Wrote many grants for the office and for the Dubuque/Jo Davies Crime Stoppers organization.
- 1982-1990 and 1998-2002, served as Mayor for the City of Asbury, Iowa. Provided for day-to-day operations of the city and wrote grants for the city.
- 1985-2005: adjunct instructor, Northeast Iowa Community College, Peosta, Iowa. Taught EMT-B program; paramedic program; emergency rescue technician program; critical care program; and numerous continuing education programs.
- 1992-1996: part owner of Criti Care Mobile Medical Services, Dubuque, Iowa. This was a private emergency and non-emergency paramedic ambulance service operating in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
- 1996-2003: part owner of Heartland Regional Paramedic Service, Dubuque, Iowa. This was a private emergency and non-emergency paramedic ambulance service operating in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Operated both a ground ambulance service and a fixed wing air ambulance service. Service included basic, advanced, paramedic and critical care.
- 2003-April, 2009: owner and staff paramedic for Heartland EMS, Inc. This was a private emergency and non-emergency paramedic ground ambulance service. Operated in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Services included basic, advanced, paramedic and critical care. Also provided wheelchair/shuttle services.
- 1999-May, 2009: Deputy Director, Dubuque County/City Office of Emergency Management, Dubuque, Iowa. This was a volunteer position.
- 2009-January, 2012: Staff Paramedic, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, based at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa. Provided emergency and non-emergency ambulance response and worked in the emergency room as needed.
