Multiskilled Resources Australia

Whilst employed by Multiskilled Resources Australia (MRA), three years were spent on site performing a site engineer’s role at a Hunter Valley Coal Preparation Plant (HVCPP) site that also managed Howick and Newdell Coal Preparation Plants and the Hunter Valley Train Loading Plant. The initial job at the preparation plant was to evaluate all instrumentation then set up and program a scheduled instrument maintenance scheme. When the project was complete and handed over to HVCPP maintenance I was transferred to the Reliability Team where I continued in maintaining all instrument and electrical maintenance procedures as well as revising the instrument and electrical CAD drawings. Other tasks included creating electrical scopes of work and managing the installation of air conditioning on stackers, reclaimers and plant switchrooms as well as converting 110V & 240V instrumentation to 24VDC. Another project I was assigned was to create and programme a scheduled condition monitoring maintenance system with a similar structure as the electrical and instrumentation maintenance systems.

Previous Employer ABB INSTALLATIONS from Mar 1988 to Jan 2001

ABB Installations

This company has changed names several times over the last few years, when I commenced employment the company was called James Watt Electrical the name was changed to ABB Installations and is now called Downer Engineering.

During the twelve years of service with the company there were several changes of role but most of my time was spent with ABB Installations on site at the Orica Plant at Kooragang Island (NSW) in the position as an Instrument & Electrical Supervisor. ABB have a permanent office and a workshop on site to carry out instrument and electrical construction and maintenance work.

The Orica site has an Ammonium Plant, Aqua Ammonia Bottling plant, 3 Nitric Acid Plants and 2 Ammonium Nitrate Plants. Due to the high work rate of these plants running 24 hours a day there are regular minor and major shutdowns on all plants.

As the site supervisor in control of a team of approximately 30 tradesmen during the shutdowns and construction of several of these plants, has provided me with extensive knowledge of Orica site’s electrical, instrumentation and hazardous area equipment.

Redbank Power Station Project was a new and innovative approach to power generation with this plant being the first of six planned to be constructed in Australia. The super efficient mini power stations are fuelled on the coal tailings retrieved from the filtering of run off water.

The ABB Newcastle manager at the time asked me to leave the Orica site to assist leading the instrumentation team consisting of 15 instrument technicians and 5 plumbers on the construction and commissioning of the Redbank Power Station Project.
