WORK HISTORY:
2002 to 2010 Merck
Senior Systems Analyst (February 2002 – October 2010)
Working with Program and Solution Managers, responsibilities included environment management and hardware procurement. Also, assigned to projects involving new applications to ensure proper environment setup procedures were followed in order to have new and existing applications integrated properly. Hosted integration meetings involving key representatives from respective areas.
Personal projects included automating several aspects of UNIX Deployment culminating in a Virtual Analyst concept. Its implementation allowed for 24x7 deployment coverage with little or no recurrent expenditure since it endowed a single UNIX account with sufficient artificial intelligence to outperform a live Analyst. I undertook the conceptual, design, coding, testing and release phases.
Acted as the Release Manager during two periods. Training included Project Management and Management courses.
Other activities included Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Oracle Enterprise Linux System Administration along with Windows Server 2003 Administration.
1998 to 2002 Metamor (Consulting Firm)
Systems Analyst – Full time assignment at Merck (March 1998 – February 2002)
Reported to the Merck Staff Manager in charge of UNIX Deployments. Mainly responsible for the packaging and deployment of software packages to three different user environments including a production environment comprised of several hundred international users on approximately eighty HP-UX 11.0 based servers and including several thousand gigabytes allocated to database instances (Oracle 8.1.6). Packaging and deployment environment was based on HP OpenView Software Distributor (HP-SD).
Duties included the quality control of package source documents and files, maintenance of packaging scripts (HP-UX 11.0 Korn Shell) and joint maintenance, along with UNIX System Administrators, of a main depot server and two ancillary servers. Depot server was a central repository of all packaging scripts and utilities, all software packages (both current and past) and all deployment log files (both current and past). Duties entailed an understanding of HP-SD, familiarity with most HP-UX 11.0 UNIX commands and administrative functions, ksh scripting ability, troubleshooting in a UNIX environment, an understanding of database structure and SQL scripting, liaising with SAs, DBAs, software developers, integration and user acceptance testing personnel and end users.
Participated in several key meetings deciding group policy and direction. Instrumental in formulating a deployment strategy whereby a single software package could be successfully deployed to any compatible database instance without first re-packaging for the associated UNIX account on the target server.
1997 to 1998 IMI Systems, Inc. (Consulting Firm)
System Administrator – Full time assignment at AT&T (February 1997 - March 1998)
Reported to AT&T Staff Manager in charge of Release Installations. Responsible for the installation of new releases in a production environment comprised of over two thousand users on a UNIX (NCR SVR4) based WAN of approximately sixty machines and including over two hundred gigabytes allocated to database servers (Sybase SQL Server 11). Releases included package creation and installation, the running and output monitoring of executables (binary and ASCII) associated with process and performance enhancements, user interface and database table updates. This entailed liaising with other SAs, DBAs, software developers, table maintenance personnel and the preparation of installation and problem logs. These logs were kept in a database designed and implemented by me using MS Access 97 running under MS Windows NT 4.0.
Also, responsible for maintaining four UNIX (NCR SVR4) environments with Sybase SQL servers on a daily basis. Duties included adding and removing users, scheduling backups, system monitoring, troubleshooting, auditing security, process evaluation and improvement, installing software and database updates together with storage and documentation maintenance. On one occasion I had to expeditiously assign one hundred and twenty logical devices (disk slices) for two databases comprising one hundred and fifty gigabytes of storage. Developed and implemented several utilities including an automated capture and playback system whereby command line entry was automatically captured during an update session in one environment for playback in another environment.
1991 to 1996 Cardinal Color, Inc.
System Administrator (February 1991 - December 1996)
In charge of information management and reporting to CEO and General Manager at a small business with gross annual sales of nine million dollars. Supervised eight office staff members and worked in conjunction with both production and quality control personnel. Responsible for the modification, maintenance and training associated with Datalogix's (an Oracle subsidiary) Cimpro accounting, formula and production management program running under HPUX (HP UNIX) on HP 9000 minicomputer with ten terminals and five printers attached. Developed and implemented several utility attachments to the main program with features designed to enable cutting down on data entry time, checking data integrity and interfacing with word processing and spreadsheet programs. A total in excess of one thousand hours logged in connection with program modification and utility development.
Also, responsible for the security and integrity of the UNIX environment at both the operating system (OS) and hardware levels. Maintenance of the HP 9000 and peripherals involved both strip down and cleaning on three occasions together with two hard drive replacements. One hard drive replacement single-handedly involved the complete reinstallation of the UNIX OS, peripheral devices and restoration of previous file system from backup tape. Backups were scheduled on a daily basis.
Recommended, installed, configured and maintained software packages running on the com¬pany's nine Intel based IBM compatible personal computers including WFWG 3.11 and Windows 95 operating systems. Installed computer hardware upgrades such as motherboards, memory and hard drives.
EDUCATION: B.Sc. Electrical Engineering.
