EXPERIENCE:
• Research Assistant at NYU-Poly, Brooklyn, NY Oct’09 – Present
Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences.
Cytotoxicity studies with mammalian cell lines (Fibroblasts and PC12 cells), using whole Cell-based sensors and MTT assay. This includes fabricating cell sensors for Potentiometric studies, which can be of major application in real time drug screening and also for the study of biomaterial interactions. Submitted manuscript on this work. Currently working on electrical stimulation of both cell lines using conductive polymers. Managing Cell culture facility from research to purchasing lab supplies. Training undergraduate students and designing research for their senior thesis.
• Visiting student volunteer at JNCASR, Bangalore, India Mar – Jul’09
Evolutionary and Organismal Biology Unit.
Biogeography of higher mammals: Mitochondrial and Microsatellite DNA extracted from fecal samples of higher mammals like Asian Elephants, Chital, etc; and then PCR amplified to sequence and group the individuals into different haplotypes for genetic variation studies.
• Research Intern at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad, India Oct’07 - Mar’08
Biologics Development Center.
Expression of different drl genes in CHO DHFR- cells (dihydrofolate reductase deficient Chinese hamster ovarian cells): Three different genes transiently expressed in GLP conditions. Expression studied by RNA, DNA and protein level analysis.
SKILLS:
Cell culture: Maintenance of mammalian cell lines including subculture, cell counting, Cryo-preservation; Cell viability estimation by MTT Assay; Lipofection, Electropolation and heat shock treatment; Clonal selection of recombinants using Silicone rings; handling yeast cell cultures.
Molecular biology: Plasmid DNA miniprep and midiprep isolation, RNA isolation, Nanodrop quantification of DNA and proteins. Cloning techniques: Restriction digestion and ligation; Transformation and selection, AGE, Reverse Transcription, PCR, SDS PAGE, Silver staining, Western blotting and ELISA. Hands on experience in DNA extractions, PCR amplification of microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA, sequence data analysis and primer design using SequencherTM.
Bioinformatics: Databases like NCBI, EMBL, Entrez, GenBank, Uniprot, Swiss-prot, PROSITE, PDB; Software tools like Clustal, BLAST and FASTA; Software programs like Rasmol for structure visualization and Sequencher.
Other skills: MS Office (Word, Excel and Power point), Basics in C.
PUBLICATION: Submitted a manuscript for publication on “Reference Electrode Effect on Fibroblasts in Potentiometric Whole Cell-based Sensor” as the first author in Jan 2012.
