Professional Experience
PHILIPS ELECTRONICS CORP. AUTOMOTIVE PLAYBACK MODULES 1999 - 2009
Embedded Software Engineer, Field Applications Engineer, Sr. Software Applications Engineer
Received Philips Patent Filing Award, for Philips patent US010523: “A SYSTEM UTILITY INTERFACE FOR SOFTWARE UPGRADES AND DIAGNOSTICS IN AUTOMOTIVE OR PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS”
Played a key role on a Philips/Delphi joint integration project for the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show with Philips “Infinite Audio” technology. (to read press release Google the following text: “Delphi Philips Infinite Audio”)
Performed the role of main engineering liaison between Microsoft and the R&D headquarters in Germany for resolution of software and hardware issues of a Philips/PLDS CD-ROM mechanism that got successfully integrated into a Microsoft Automotive reference platform which is based on Microsoft Auto and Windows® Embedded CE.
Gave hardware and software integration support to diverse Philips north American customers, such as Johnson Controls, Bose, Delphi, Harman/Becker, Microsoft and Siemens-VDO (now Continental). With these customers I played a key role in successful integrations of CD-ROM, CD-MP3 (compressed audio), DVD-ROM and DVD-Video players into their host applications, typically Navigation Radios, Infotainment Overhead units and compressed audio radios used in Volkswagen, Ford, General Motors and other vehicle platforms.
Participated on a global development software team to modify software for a DVD-Video mechanism that utilized the MPEG Vibratto Series decoder from ESS.
Programmed an embedded controller board based on the NEC µPD78F0034AY microcontroller, where a low level I2C driver was bridged to a UART. This embedded system was utilized as the application board by one of our customers and later it also became a standard tool for controlling the Philips DVD-Video player through an RS-232 connection from a PC, simulating the customer’s host applications. The board also interfaced to Ford’s ACP protocol.
Utilized Microsoft Visual Studio .NET to develop Visual C++ and C# simulation and reference PC applications that interfaced with the DVD and CD products. Through these PC tools, it was possible to perform semi-automated PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection), real-time measurements based on customer’s applications and scripting for reproducing customer reported issues.
Generation of software engineering documentation, such as: URS (User Requirement Specification), HSI (Hardware Software Interface), SWS (Software Specification) and CIS (Communication Interface Specification).
POLLAK ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS DIVISION, A STONERIDGE COMPANY 1996 – 1999
Senior Test Engineer
Designed, tested and supervised the integration of Automated Test Equipment and released to the production floor more than 75 test stations in 3 years. Co-designed the fixtures for the different stations, which had automatic engagement by means of pneumatics, valves, Electro-pneumatic regulators, solenoids and air pressure transducers.
Developed new techniques for LED color detection and implemented Flash Memory Software automatic loading. Developed new techniques in Microcontroller based product testing utilizing Motorola’s BDM (Background Debugging Mode). The Test Stations utilized PC-controlled systems with GPIB interfaces, GPIB instrumentation and Power Supplies, Digital I/O, Analog to Digital Interface, signal conditioning and Frame grabbers for vision systems.
Designed the hardware and programmed in C and assembly the software for microcontroller-based modules such as: closed-loop air pressure control module, frequency/PWM dual signal generator and a universal video/signal multiplexer, among other modules utilizing the Motorola (now Freescale) MC68HC11F1 and MC68HC705C8 microcontrollers, with UART serial communications and multi-point networks such as SAEJ1708 and RS485.
Participated in Product Launch and Production Teams to understand and document the test equipment requirement and write the test Specifications.
DELPHI AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS – ENERGY & ENGINE DIVISION 1994 – 1996
Product Design Engineer
Design of automotive sensors and solenoids (ABS and ignition systems).
Intensive use of 3-D math Modeling Software (Unigraphics 9 and 10).
Construction of SLA (Stereo-Lithography Apparatus) prototypes.
Member of the Strategy Board for Product Information Systems.
