PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, EAST BAY, Hayward, California • 2009-Present (By Contract)

Adjunct Faculty, Department of Biology & Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Compiled syllabi, presentations, quizzes, assignments, and exams for undergraduate biology courses (80 students per lecture and 26 students per laboratory session). Utilized PeopleSoft database for entering and reporting students’ grades. Counsel students on study methods / concerns. Taught intense 5-week course designed for 10-week period to 78 undergraduate students.

• Consistently receive positive feedback from students each quarter.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH (Various Departments), Salt Lake City, Utah • 1998-2008

Department Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Specialist, David M. Grant NMR Center (2000-2008), Full Time

Directed, conducted, and supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate NMR laboratories sections and operational workshops each academic year. Facilitated research and development for inter- and intradepartmental investigations. Managed NMR activities such as account accesses, instrumental usage, and billing for 200 NMR users. Assisted clients with investigations of samples of various sources (e.g. shale extract, gold implanted DNA, metal chelated organic compounds, intermediates) from synthetic reactions. Provided technical support and troubleshooting. Delivered public speeches and presentations to New Mexico Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Conference and the 46th and 47th Experimental Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Conferences.

• Developed and implemented standard protocols (SOPs).

• Trained >350+ professionals of diverse scientific backgrounds; facilitated relocation of NMR facility to new building.

Research Associate, Department of Chemistry (2001-2006), Full Time

Conducted intensive studies, experiments, research, and analysis pertaining to polymer, carbohydrate, chitin, and protein chemistry.

• Engineered and synthesized hydrogel beads, cross-linked derivatives and metal-polymer complexes from chitosan using reverse column chromatography technique.

• Facilitated isolation, extraction, and purification of DNA from Oxytricha nova telomere end-binding protein domains; succeeded in protein transformation and separation of 22 and 28 KDa protein fragments using FLPC.

• Designed and conducted solid phase structural polymer analysis using analytical techniques such as NMR, XRPD, XRD, ESR, far-FTIR, and ICP-OES.

• Conducted intensive isotropic labeling studies of D-glucose using MS and the characterization of monoglycans, D-glucosamine, and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine using NMR and XRPD.

• Corrected a 40-year misassignment of the monomers in chitin chemistry using shape factors properties of the chemical shift tensors as a new assignment tool; successfully assigned correct chemical shifts using solid state FIREMAT nuclear magnetic resonance technique.

• Successfully predicted the metal-polymer binding scenario using ab initi calculations such as MP2, HF, and DFT with Gaussian03 software; confirmed consistency with experimental data from elementary analysis.

• Resolved a 95 kDa polymer in structural and conformational input; also engineered the cross-bridge of polymer and studied metal chelation of polymer and the cross-bridge polymer.

• Authored 5 peer-reviewed publications in chitin chemistry.

Research Associate, University of Utah School of Medicine, Department of Pathology (1998-1999), Full Time

Acquired experience in DNA cloning, subcloning using plasmid vectors, and competitive / non-competitive ELISA. Proficient in molecular biological techniques including restriction enzyme splicing, separation of different sized fragments on agarose gel electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE, sterile handling techniques of bacterial cultures, plasmid DNA purification, DNA ligation and transformation into competent bacterial cells, DNA sequencing, primer extension analysis, PCR, enzyme kinetics, protein purification via HPLC and FLPC, and characterization of bacterial genome. Assisted management with laboratory inventory.

• Successfully characterized an iron uptake gene of an unusual bacterial strain; published data through a peer-reviewed journal.

• Successfully accomplished M.S. thesis requirement along with full-time employment.

SALT LAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Salt Lake City, Utah • 2000-2005 (By Contract)

Adjunct Faculty, Department of Biological Sciences

Designed and administered syllabi, quizzes, and exams for undergraduate biology courses. Utilized PeopleSoft database for entering and reporting students’ grades. Prepared lectures and labs using various teaching methods. Advised and counseled students regarding study methods and their concerns.

• Successfully taught students from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds; consistently received positive feedback from graduates.
